UPDATE: The puppy has reportedly been rescued. Stay with us for updates.

A puppy has recently taken residence in the forest behind Danieley building J at Elon University, prompting the attention of students, Campus Safety and Police and the Bayou Rescue Center, a state animal rescue organization.

The dog was first spotted in the woods early last week. Many students  brought the dog food, water and a blanket before leaving for spring break.

Bayou Rescue has also visited the site. After trying unsuccessfully to coax the dog out of the woods, the organization posted a sign warning students to “leave the puppy alone and [not] feed him human food.”

The dog appeared to be very skittish and shy, and many students are worried about its welfare while the campus is mostly empty. Sophomore Jessica Gore spent hours attempting to coax the dog out of the woods before leaving for break.

“Regardless of the fact that the weather already poses an issue, more seriously, the dog is now accustomed to being fed and there will be no one here to feed him,” Gore said.

The Bayou Rescue Center was unavailable to comment on the status of the rescue mission.
