The Elon University men’s tennis team defeated the Winthrop University Eagles 6-1 on Sunday afternoon, Feb. 24. Despite losing in two out of the three doubles matches, the Phoenix came roaring back to win all 6 singles matches.

The No. 1 doubles team of junior Cameron Silverman and sophomore Stefan Fortmann defeated freshman Corey Decandia and sophomore Dylan Comerford, 8-6. The other two teams of sophomores Brian Kowalski and Jordan Kaufman and freshman Robert Lindgren with sophomore Juan Madrid were defeated 8-6 and 9-8, respectively.

When it came time for singles, the Phoenix finally hit their stride. Silverman, ranked No. 28 nationally, defeated Comerford in straight sets, 6-3, 6-0.

At No. 2 singles, Fortmann lost just one game in his match as he made quick work of sophomore Peter Nagovnak.

Lindgren defeated freshman Ivar Aramburu in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 in the No. 3 singles position.

Kaufman clinched Elon’s victory from the No. 4 singles spot by defeating junior Yuta Hirokawa. Kaufman battled it out for a tough 7-6 win in the first set, but carried his momentum into the second set with a 6-1 win.

No. 5 singles player Kowalski got by freshman Juan Pablo Boada in straight sets, 6-2, 7-6. The lone match to go all three sets came from the No. 6 singles position as Madrid defeated freshman Michael Chen, 6-2, 5-7, 10-6.

With the win, the Phoenix get back to .500 at 3-3. The loss drops Winthrop to 3-6. Elon’s next match comes in one week’s time when they face off against The Citadel.
