Students gathered at South Campus on Saturday to get a little messy for a cause.

About 500 students signed up for Campus Rec's first annual paint race, running or walking 2K (about 1.3 miles), and getting hit with colored dye at checkpoints along the way.

At the end of the race, participants had the opportunity to dye t-shirts, and made sure to take plenty of pictures.

The proceeds from the event will help run Elonthon, Elon's 24-hour dance marathon in the spring. Each year, students gather in Alumni Gym to dance and raise money for the patients at Duke Children's Hospital.

At the race on Saturday, each runner wore a sticker with both the name of a patient, and the disease they are battling.

Elon senior and Elonthon Executive Director Allie Weller, says they'll be working year-round to support the event.

"We do fundraising all the time. Every week we're coming up with something new. This will probably be the biggest thing of the fall, but we do smaller things all the time to raise money."

Once paying back the price of the dye, Weller estimates the event will have raised about $5000.
