Offense stays hot as Elon baseball bounces back

Building upon a weekend in which the team scored 23 runs in three games while bouncing back from two gut-wrenching defeats, the Elon University baseball team sped past High Point University 12-2 April 10 at Latham Park. Elon had lost twice early in the season to High Point.

Tasteful approach helping Casey Jones carry Elon

It doesn’t take long for Casey Jones’ focus to shift after Elon University baseball games. After the Phoenix beat Campbell University 2-1 April 2, the junior first baseman/outfielder had one thing on his mind before head coach Mike Kennedy’s postgame talk: candy. “He came out to the huddle; he already had a bag of candy in his hand,” Kennedy said.

King's grand slam helps Elon get by Samford

Highlighted by a sixth inning grand slam by junior Chris King, the Elon University baseball team overcame multiple deficits in picking up a 7-5 road win at Samford University April 5. Trailing 3-0 in the sixth, the Phoenix loaded the bases with nobody out on singles by juniors Ryan Cooper and Casey Jones and a walk by senior Sebastian Gomez.

Phoenix comeback nullified in extra innings

The bats were silent for the Elon University baseball team on Wednesday night, March 26 at Latham Park — for the first eight innings. In the ninth, redshirt freshman catcher Chris Hall hit a game-tying home run to knot the low-scoring affair with Wake Forest University at 2-2.

Elon drops rubber match to Western Carolina

After a three hour, 17 minute rain delay, the Elon University baseball team could not muster enough in the rubber match of a three game series with Southern Conference foe Western Carolina University, falling 9-7 to the Catamounts March 23 at Latham Park. With one out in the top of the third and Western Carolina leading 2-0, a rain delay was put into action that threw off both teams.

Elon splits first two games with Western Carolina

In what may become the final series between the Southern Conference heavyweights, Elon University and Western Carolina University split the first two games of a three-game series this weekend at Latham Park. Elon took the first game 5-1 Friday after 7.2 stellar innings from junior Lucas Bakker, while Western Carolina won the second game 6-5 after a pair of late home runs. Elon 5, Western Carolina 1 Elon went behind 1-0 in the fourth after shortstop Aaron Attaway reached on an error and came around to score on a sacrifice fly by right fielder Dykota Speiss.

Southern Conference baseball preview

The 2014 Southern Conference baseball season marks the end of an era. For the last several years, the SoCon has been a premier mid-major baseball league, often ranked in the Top 10 in conference RPI in the NCAA. In the latest round of conference realignment, largely driven by football and men’s basketball, baseball was a casualty in the SoCon.

Iowa products carrying Elon baseball

Of everything that has helped the Elon University baseball team to a 13-7 start, the Hawkeye State must be the most beneficial. Two junior college transfers from the state of Iowa, juniors Lucas Bakker and Jake Stalzer, have combined for six wins and have now won the last four Southern Conference Pitcher of the Week honors.

Bakker tosses gem in Elon win

After more than 17 years as head baseball coach at Elon University, Mike Kennedy has seen a lot. What he saw March 14 at Latham Park stood in a special place of its own. In as good a pitcher’s duel as one could draw up, Elon junior Lucas Bakker outdid Georgia Southern University ace Sam Howard, tossing a two-hit shutout in a 1-0 Elon victory. Bakker, this past week’s Southern Conference Pitcher of the Week, walked three and struck out seven, throwing 100 pitches in for his third win of the season.

Mental mistakes fuel Elon loss to Liberty

While it wasn’t the prettiest of games, it still says something that perhaps the most intriguing part of it was the aftermath. After a 4-2 loss to Liberty University at Latham Park March 11, Elon University head coach Mike Kennedy spent more than 15 minutes talking to his team in the outfield. Topic discussed included errors, mental mistakes and the team morale. “Our effort wasn’t good,” Kennedy said.

Elon drops 12-inning tilt with High Point

Days after losing a tight one at home to High Point University, the Elon University baseball team fell to the Panthers, 2-1, in 12 innings March 5 at High Point. With one out in the 12th and runners at the corners, High Point center fielder Josh Greene lofted a 3-2 pitch into center, good for a sacrifice fly and to score the winning run. The Panthers drew a leadoff walk from Elon senior Jacob Baker, and Elon coach Mike Kennedy pulled Baker in favor of freshman Dimitri Lettas.
