For years, Elon University's learning communities have depended on juniors and seniors to act as unofficial mentors to freshmen and sophomores on their halls. The cross-campus junior-senior cap on housing has affected those who wish to live in learning communities just as much as it has those who wish to live in on-campus housing.

Hillel, SPECTRUM and Elon University’s LGBTQ office joined forces to send three students to the 2012 National Union of Jewish LGBT Students (NUJLS) conference, Advocating Our Identities. Hillel director Nancy Luberoff said she was determined to figure out a way to get students to go to the conference, held at American University, from the moment she learned about it. Luberoff reached out to SPECTRUM and offered for Hillel to pay the travel and registration fee. She said she was happy to have two non-Jewish students willing to participate in the conference.

As almost any first-year communications major at Elon could tell you, the School of Communications now requires communications students to have a second major, a minor or a semester abroad, and, let me tell you, picking a second major is an ordeal. For us journalism-oriented kids, trying to figure out what else we’re good at while focusing on doing well in our communications courses and working on the newspaper is tough, but most of us do pretty well…except the awkward few who came in with an idea of their second major and have since tossed it completely out the window. Like me. Finding something I’m as passionate about as communications feels impossible.

Sometimes it’s difficult to think on your toes, but it’s much more difficult to come back from not thinking on your toes. As a journalist, you always have to be in the moment, planning everything out long before the story even gets written. The most important thing to do is, even if you think it will make you seem silly, ask questions when you can. Sometimes reporters need to look stupid during the interview so they don’t look stupid after the interview. Think you misheard something? Ask about it. Don’t know what your source is talking about? Ask about it. It’ll help you in the end.

It is a running joke in my family that I am always the last to know about anything. My parents would typically mention something on Saturday afternoon about a relative coming for brunch on Sunday or the fact that my cousins would be staying the following Monday and would be sleeping in my room, and I would always respond, “Wait, what? When did that happen?” and they would always tell me they’d already told me a few nights before. I don’t know if I totally buy that; I kind of feel like they just like to keep me on my toes…or I just was a very poor listener in high school, which is also possible. Anyway, this was known in my family as the “last to know phenomenon,” in which Mary Kate is consistently the last to know about any given topic.

The provost’s office appointed a committee to select a new dean and university librarian to replace Kate Hickey, who is retiring from her current position. Nevertheless, the selection of the new dean and university librarian has been a university effort, according to Mary Wise, associate vice president of academic affairs and chair of the search committee.

So this week, almost all of the new members in Elon’s sororities are getting “bigs,” but even though I’m not in a sorority, I feel like I’ve gotten two bigs this past month.

A violinist’s waltz fills Whitley auditorium Thursday morning. Earl Danieley, a weekly attender, sits in the second row in front of the podium where, in a few moments, a speaker will give a lecture. The speaker steps up to the lectern after the song ends and presents his ideas about the theme for this year’s lectures, “Change Makers,” meaning people who have changed the speaker or affected others in the world. Afterward, people mill about in the foyer, chatting over donuts and coffee. This is College Chapel.

Since its opening in October 2010, the 56 acres of land north of University Drive on Power Line Drive, officially preserved by the Board of Trustees as the Elon University Forest, has gradually become a place where classes can go to experience the outdoors. Although classes in a variety of departments have gone to the forest for research, the total number of classes that have been able to use the forest has been limited. There is a distinct reason for this limitation, according to Jeffrey Coker, chair of the Elon University Forest Advisory Committee and director of general studies.

Thomas Frank admits that last semester he was over-involved. A typical day for Frank consisted of working as an RA, taking classes, doing homework, working a second job and working on web design for others’ sites as well as his own. This semester, Frank, a junior Management Information Systems major at Iowa State University, is cutting back on his activities to focus on classes, hang out with friends and, most of all, devote more time to his up-and-coming blog, CollegeInfoGeek.com.

Hey, everybody, and welcome to a Tuesday in the life of senior reporter Mary Kate Brogan. My main focus for this blog post is TMI. TMI stands for too much information, often used when someone says something too personal or awkward.

With a new semester beginning, students are seeing plenty of syllabi, enough to probably know what kind of work merits an A or a B. According to the 2011-2012 academic catalog, an A denotes “distinguished performance” in a course, yet, according to Elon University's recent grade distribution reports for fall 2011, the average grade point average is 3.19, significantly higher than the average GPA, 2.37, in 1978, as first recorded by Mark Albertson, registrar and assistant to the provost.
