The Zayn Malik saga continues.

After leaving One Direction in March, Malik said he was going to pursue a solo career. He began collaborating with music producer Naughty Boy, dropped a rough cut of a single, and stirred up some major Twitter beef with current 1D member Louis Tomlinson (much to our dismay).

It seemed that it was time to move on from the fever dream that Malik would somehow change his mind and decide to rejoin One Direction — until recent evidence gave us hope again.

But then he dropped a new single. And now we don't know what to think.

The single is actually a cover of Rae Strummond's "No Type," so it's not something Malik wrote himself. Still, the raunchy R&B tune is vastly different from the upbeat 1D songs we're used to hearing from him.

A few other things worth noting: -Malik swears in this song, which is new, considering the PG rating of One Direction's music. -"Bad bitches are the only thing that he likes." Good to know. -The song features UK rapper Mic Righteous, which adds yet another dimension to Malik's new image.

So again, we have no idea what to think. Is Zayn returning to 1D or isn't he? We'll have to wait and see. And in the mean time, we'll probably listen to "No Type" on repeat — like a lot.
