On July 21, two United States appeals courts issued conflicting rulings on the availability of subsidies that help many Americans afford health coverage under the Affordable Care Act. Here is a breakdown of the decision, which could potentially affect millions. What was the issue? The cases centered on the Affordable Care Act, specifically a part of the law that says subsidies will be available “Through an exchange established by the state.” The law does not specifically say if those signing up on the federal exchange are also eligible. Opponents of the law challenged the Internal Revenue Service’s interpretation of the law, saying subsidies can only be offered through state-based exchanges. Proponents of the law say the lawmakers intended for subsides to be offered by both federal and state exchanges. Currently, only 14 states and the District of Columbia have their own exchanges, which means the decision could affect the 4.7 millionAmericans who signed up through the federal exchange. Scholarship to support Alamance Community College transfer students

Starting in fall 2015, one student from Alamance Community College will be chosen to receive an annual scholarship of $22,500 that will go toward Elon University tuition, fees, room and board. Alamance Community College students who will be considered for the scholarship must have at least 24 transferrable credit hours.

An Elon store clerk has been arrested and charged with filing a false police report, larceny by employee and resisting a public officer. Steven Shane Jernigan, 24, was taken into custody Wednesday, according to the Elon Police report.

Spam Sent to University E-Mail Addresses

Students checking their Elon University inbox this week may have found a strange e-mail waiting for them. Starting Thursday June 10th, many current students and alumni received a spam e-mail with the subject "Deactivation of Account!!!" Elon University officials confirm that they did not send the e-mail and students should be cautious. The e-mail asked recipients to reply to the message with information such as their username and password. "Elon University will never ask students to reply with their personal information in an e-mail," Assistant Vice President of Technology and Chief Information Office Christopher Waters said. Waters says spammers will hack into Gmail to try and obtain personal information from users. In this case, recipients can tell the e-mail is spam because although the sender is labeled "Elon University," the actual address is "," not "" According to Waters, the university's spam filters occasionally do not block out everything they should. Campus Technology says that students should only provide their personal information when it is through an Elon University secured login.

Elon officially joins the Colonial Athletic Association

On July 1, at 12:00 a.m. Elon University officially left the Southern Conference after 11 years to become a member of the Colonial Athletic Association. The Basics The move, which was officially announced by the University on May 23, 2013, was voted on unanimously by the Board of Trustees. The CAA first approached Elon about joining its conference in early April 2013 following the loss of four schools--George Mason (Atlantic 10), Georgia State (Sun Belt), Old Dominion (Conference USA) and VCU (Atlantic 10). Armed robbery reported in Elon

An armed robbery was reported Monday morning at Jay's Mart, a convenience store located about a mile east of Elon University at 951 East Haggard Ave. According to an email about the incident from Vice President of Student Life Smith Jackson, a male suspect displayed a blue handgun, before fleeing the scene on a black and orange moped eastbound on East Haggard.

Burlington anticipates bus transit system

Burlington City Council approved the proposed development of an urban transit system, which will include a route through Elon. The Burlington-Graham Metropolitan Planning Organization (BGMPO) developed a list of candidate transportation projects, including the transit system, which were discussed, evaluated and voted on Tuesday, June 17. Routes According to, the Public Transportation will have a "Hub and Spoke" design, with downtown Burlington serving as the central hub for several outreaching destinations. The transit will consist of four routes going through the cities of Burlington, Mebane, Elon and Gibsonville with estimated 30 minute travel times. The new transit will coordinate with the Elon BioBus, PART (Piedmont Authority for Regional Transportation), TTA (Research Triangle Public Transit Authority) and ACTA (Alamance County Transportation Authority). Elon announces 2014 men's soccer schedule

This season the Elon University men's soccer team will play five teams that competed in the 2013 NCAA Tournament, according to the schedule released by Elon on Tuesday. After winning three consecutive Southern Conference titles, the 2014 season will mark the squad's first year in the Colonial Athletic Association and its first season under new head coach Chris Little. In the upcoming season, the Phoenix will face Coastal Carolina and Loyola Marymount as well as CAA opponents Delaware, Drexel and William & Mary.

Elon's Pennell drafted by Tampa Bay Rays

Elon left-handed pitcher Ryan Pennell was selected by the Tampa Bay Rays yesterday in the 22nd round of the Major League Baseball first-year player draft. Pedestrian killed by train near Elon

A pedestrian was struck and killed by a train near Elon University at 2:03 p.m. on Thursday. The accident occurred near the train crossing on Gilliam Road, across from the Phoenix Arms apartment complex. The victim was identified as Justin Lamar Swanson, 27, of Burlington.
