The Elon University volleyball team didn’t have a glamorous end to its regular season, having lost four straight matches, but the Phoenix managed to sneak into the Southern Conference Tournament as the eighth and final seed.

Senior hitter Cali Estes breathed a heavy sigh after Davidson College scored the last point to end her final match at Alumni Gym. Tears flowed easily on an emotional senior night, as the Elon University volleyball team honored Estes and defensive specialist Maggie Reichard for their career with the Phoenix.

The Elon University volleyball team fell to the University of North Carolina at Greensboro 3-0 (25-19, 25-21, 25-20) on Wednesday, Nov. 13, in Alumni Gym. Led by senior right-side hitter Karrian Chambers’ 13 kills, the Spartans led for the majority of the first two sets before pulling away late in the third.

On Friday and Saturday Nov. 8 and 9, the Elon University volleyball team played its final road games of the regular season and fell to Wofford College 3-1 (25-22, 20-25, 25-23, 25-20) and Furman University 3-1 (22-25, 25-16, 25-16, 25-19). The Phoenix are now 7-7 in Southern Conference play, and fifth in the conference standings.

With starting senior guard Jack Isenbarger out due to injury, sophomore guard Tanner Samson replaced him in the starting lineup Friday night, Nov. 8, against Washington & Lee University and exceeded all expectations. Making 5 of 7 three-point attempts while scoring 17 points, Samson became an unexpected source of scoring early for the Elon University men’s basketball team as the Phoenix cruised to a 114-64 win over the Generals.

After dominating the first two sets, the Elon University volleyball team found itself with its back against the wall in the fourth set trailing Western Carolina University 21-16. Tying the game up didn’t seem like a pipe dream, as the Phoenix tied the third set at 23-all when they were down 22-19, but the Catamounts came out the victor to extend the match. The real question was if Elon could complete the comeback in the fourth set.

For the second straight night, the Elon University volleyball team had to go to five sets to take down a Southern Conference foe after an extended third set slipped through their fingers. While the match against Furman University the previous night was a back-and-forth thriller, Elon’s game against Wofford College was a blowout, then a Terrier comeback, then a Phoenix victory Saturday, Oct. 26.

The last game of this week’s slice of NFL-goodness is the Monday Night matchup between the Seattle Seahawks and the St. Louis Rams. The Seahawks have quarterback Russell Wilson, the go-to counter example for anyone who doubts a smaller signal caller can succeed in the NFL. Wilson’s Seahawks are the current favorites to win the NFC West, and his ability to make smart throws at any level of the field along with his dynamic running ability is a big reason why.

Calvin Johnson still wasn’t in his typical record-breaking form Sunday, Oct. 13 against the Cleveland Browns. A knee injury has been bugging the Lions all-world wide receiver for the past couple of weeks, even forcing him to sit out of a crucial divisional tilt against the Green Bay Packers, in which the Lions lost 22-9.

The Elon University volleyball team lost at Samford University Friday, Oct. 18, 3-0 (14-25, 21-25, 21-25), and won against the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga the following day, 3-2 (22-25, 22-25, 25-22, 25-17, 15-12). The Phoenix is now 4-4 in Southern Conference play and has a 13-11 record on the season.

In perhaps the most entertaining and compelling NFL game this season, the Denver Broncos bested the Dallas Cowboys in a 51-48 shootout thanks to performances from two quarterbacks playing near-flawless football. Peyton Manning played at his typical level, throwing for more than 400 yards and passing for four touchdowns. Tony Romo bested Manning in a statistical sense, throwing for more than 500 yards and passing for five touchdowns.
