With the recent obsession with all things green, the issue of sustainability has become a global hot topic that has trickled down into personal homes, office buildings and even college campuses.
Dimmed lights, flying sunglasses and a live acoustic rendition of Beyonce’s “Single Ladies” sure doesn't sound like the typical atmosphere at Acorn Coffee Shop. But on Thursday nights throughout the year, the cafe in downtown Elon gets both an aesthetic and acoustic makeover for Open Mic Night.
The debate over Amendment One, legislation that recognizes marriage only as a union between man and woman, has sparked conversations regarding marriage equality, social approval and basic human rights. But the conversations haven’t been limited to the upcoming ballot in North Carolina. Individuals across the globe have voiced their opinion on topics such as sexuality and religion and the institution of marriage.

The Elon University Board of Trustees recently approved the 2012-2013 fiscal year budget, which includes an undergraduate tuition increase of 3.99 percent. This increase is the smallest in tuition since the 2004-2005 academic year.

The Interfaith Youth Core, a non-profit organization that promotes interfaith conversation, held a campus-wide meeting concerning religious diversity and interfaith cooperation on college campuses. The Feb. 7 meeting focused on the goals and purpose of the IFYC and concluded with the results from research conducted on Elon University's campus. Phil Smith, associate chaplain and director of religious and spiritual life at Elon, provided context for the IFYC before turning the podium over to Megan Hughes-Johnson, director of campus engagements for IFYC.
Belk Library offers a variety resources, including books, newspapers, movies, Internet access and printers. While students typically view the library as an academic space, other users come in to check their e-mail, look at pictures of their grandchildren or play a few rounds of solitaire; the “regulars” are often doing more significant things, said Kate Hickey, dean and university librarian. In his State of the Union address Jan. 24, President Barack Obama spoke about his proposed reforms for keeping the cost of college low and attainable for all Americans, the specifics of which were organized in a blueprint released Jan. 27. The plans include creating incentives such as the Race to the Top College Affordability and Completion program and a First in the World competition to promote low costs and quality, redoubling federal support and empowering families to make informed decisions about education.
Elon's new work study program, Providing Aid Through Campus Employment, has had a successful first semester and will be growing in size next year, according to Rene Jackson, the coordinator of the PACE program. The program was designed to help students who don't qualify for financial aid but for whom a guaranteed on-campus job would assist in paying off their tuition bill.
Elon University students cram into College Street Tap House, a popular bar just off Elon's campus, several nights a week. While the bar is known to many for its affordable drinks and large stage, underage students know it as the bar where they can consume alcohol without getting caught.
Most resident assistants look forward to getting to know their residents and enjoy spending time with them throughout the year. But the overwhelming, often unappreciated time commitment that comes with the position prevents some RA's from being enthusiastic about their job.
