Memory of loved ones pave Mountains-to-Sea Trail

(12/07/24 2:26pm)

Specks of gray peek out of Donna Burch’s blonde hair while she sits in downtown Elon during a crisp autumn day. A white, linen long-sleeve top disguises her cobalt blue undershirt. Resting on a thin chain, a silver, circular pendant resembling a wedding ring dangles from her neck. When the sun hits her, the lenses of her glasses darken. Through the tint, tears form in her eyes as she remembers her husband, Haley Burch.

Man with a silver thumb: 91-year-old Elon alum crafts silverware creations

(11/27/24 4:38pm)

With shaky hands, Bob Rice opened one of the various plastic tall storage cabinets in his garage. Inside are a mix of wooden, plastic and shoe boxes. Some are labeled vintage spoons, forks and coins but that’s not what he is looking for. He scans his inventory with the thick lenses that he calls his glasses, but he eventually finds a box labeled knives.

Burlington Preservation Salvage Shop saves historic homes from landfills

(11/17/24 6:24pm)

Inside a World War II quonset hut, a building shaped like a silver half-moon, lies two cased doors resting along tall wooden crates. This door sticks out in the Salvage Shop like a sore thumb; it’s the tallest object in the entire shop, but it’s also quite beautiful. The top of the door has a half-circle structure with details on it to look like rays of sun. Besides the fade and chipping of paint, this door remains completely intact and in decent condition. The only thing it was missing is its story.

(11/14/24 3:40pm)

The lack of relationship with the Occaneechi Band of the Saponi Nation shocked junior co-president of the Native American Student Association, Sakura Kawakami, upon arrival to Elon. During her convocation, Kawakami and her father had expected a welcome from the Occaneechi Band, as this is customary for her tribes, the Ngāti Porou and Te Arawa of the Māori Indigenous people of New Zealand.

Elon Watches: Young Frankenstein

(10/25/24 5:18pm)

A ghoulish castle drenches a hill in shadow. Lightning illuminates the cobweb ridden staircases of its interior. Outside, horses whine as werewolves howl throughout the thick forest of the town below. If this sounds like the introduction to a horror film, that couldn’t be more incorrect.
