Alamance County commissioners approved $250,000 of funding to delay potential Alamance-Burlington School System layoffs at their monthly meeting Feb. 5.
The temporary ramp that had previously been attached to Graham resident’s Alvaro Torralba home was put out onto the curb as The Elon Ramp Pilot Project arrived on Saturday, Feb. 3 to install a new wheelchair-accessible ramp. Torralba said he became wheelchair-bound four years ago due to a spinal injury.
Elon University kicked off Black History Month on Thursday, Feb. 1 with the first of many events centering around a designated theme. This year’s theme is “Rhythms of Resilience: One Soul, One Sound.”
Authorities from the Alamance County Sheriff’s Office reported they found human remains near Travis Creek and the Haw River on Jan. 31. The discovery occurred during a missing-person search for 19-year-old Elon resident Antwain McDaniel. The remains were identified to be McDaniel shortly after 6 p.m.

Lindsey Palazzolo is the recruitment chair for Sigma Sigma Sigma, or Tri Sigma, at Elon University. She said that before COVID, roughly 700 potential new members were registered to rush. Though numbers had been down since the pandemic, Palazzolo said this year there are roughly 560 PNMs.
Professor Emeritus of Economics Tom Tiemann served Elon University for more than 30 years. He passed away on Friday, Dec. 22 at age 75. A recipient of the Elon Medallion, Tiemann was the founding dean of the Martha and Spencer Love School of Business, department chair of economics, director of general studies and director of the business fellows program. Apart from these various titles and accolades, he is most remembered for his compassion, kindness and his dedication to his community.
This year, MLK Jr. Day fell on Jan. 15. The International Civil Rights Center and Museum in Greensboro hosted a special presentation, including a speech titled “Promissory Note”.

Approximately 12 vehicles were broken into in the Station at Mill Point and roughly 10 were broken into near West Trollinger Avenue in the Town of Elon around 3:30 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 8.
Hilton Kelly is the next dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and will begin at Elon on June 1. Kelly serves as the dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Education at University of Wisconsin-Platteville. Gabie Smith, the current dean of the college, announced she was stepping down at the end of the school year last August. Smith was the fifth senior staff member to leave her position in the past two years.

Whitley Auditorium was one of the five buildings constructed after the famous 1923 fire burned down Elon’s administration building. The year of 2023 marks Whitley’s 100th anniversary of being a space where students can come together and make memories.
Before the Mebane Planning Council voted no, Buc-ee’s was set to construct a new location in Mebane off of Interstate 40 on Trollingwood Hawfield Road.
By the 2012-13 academic year, the Center for Environmental Studies began to take form in Loy Farm. With an agroecological center, and courses for adventure-based learning and gardening, Loy Farm continued to expand as the department pitched more and more ideas for the space. Now, a tenured professor and department chair for environmental studies, Robert Charest began teaching at Elon University 13 years ago and is a licensed architect in North Carolina — as well as a general contractor for Elon University. He has worked to bring his architectural ideas to life in his courses and into the Tiny House Project.
Elon University was granted reaccreditation after an examination of 73 measures of quality — ranging from academic affairs, to student life, administration and governing boards.
Students from five sections of Elon University’s Grand Challenges I engineering course launched underwater remote-operated vehicles as part of their final project.
