The Elon University women’s golf team placed seventh out of 16 teams at the John Kirk Panther Intercollegiate in Stockbridge, Ga., March 30-April 1. The Phoenix finished with a final combined score of 919, falling in at 55 over par at Eagle’s Landing Country Club. Elon had rounds of 308, 300 and 311 in the tournament, which was hosted by Georgia State University.

Heavy rain in the Wilmington, N.C., area cancelled the final round of the Seahawk Intercollegiate, making the 36-hole standings the final results. The Elon University men’s golf team placed ninth among the 13 schools in the event. The Phoenix shot a combined total of 599, with scores of 300 in round one and 299 in the second 18 holes. Elon was 23 over par for the event, two strokes behind eighth-place University of Wisconsin.

Competing at the Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate in Aiken, S.C., the Elon University men’s golf team finished 13th out of 18 teams at the event held March 10-11. The Phoenix finished with a final score 898, with combined rounds of 298, 302 and 298. Elon was 58 over par for the tournament.

Making its spring debut on the course, the Elon University women’s golf team placed 10th out of 36 teams at the Kiawah Island Classic in Kiawah Island, S.C. The Phoenix shot a combined score of 920, good for 56 over par. Elon had combined rounds of 301, 315 and 304 in the three-day tournament.

The Elon University men’s golf team began its 2014 spring season at the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate Feb. 17-18 in Hilton Head, S.C. The Phoenix finished the event tied for seventh place with Francis Marion University at a combined score of 900 for the 54-hole event. That score placed Elon at 36 over par for the tournament, as the Phoenix racked up combined scores of 294, 307 and 299 over the three rounds.

When news broke out about the International Olympic Committee’s decision to get rid of wrestling in 2020, many became enraged. Defendants of the sport argued that wrestling was the oldest Olympic sport and therefore held a special place in the Olympic Games. Many also said wrestling was boring and not one of the more popular Olympic sports. Whereas golf, the newest sport added, has a huge following across the globe and includes huge stars such as Tiger Woods, Phil Mickleson, and Rory McIlroy.

Bill Morningstar, the current head coach of the Elon University men's golf team, will retire in May 2013 after the men's golf season wraps up, according to an e-mail sent to faculty and staff today by athletic director Dave Blank.
