Republican Richard Dietz is one of two candidates for North Carolina Supreme Court Associate Justice Seat 03. Dietz is running on the platform of protecting constitutional rights for general elections on Nov. 8.

Dietz joined the Court of Appeals in 2014. Before his experience as a judge, Dietz worked as a partner at Kilpatrick Townsend & Stockton LLP.

He is running against Democrat Lucy Inman for the soon-to-be vacant seat currently held by Associate Justice Robin Hudson.

Dietz did not respond to Elon News Network’s multiple requests for comment.

According to his campaign video on his website, Dietz is running for this position because he believes judges need to place more of their focus on the beginning of the U.S. Constitution.

“My most important job, when I put on the robe, is to defend our constitutional rights,” Dietz said in his video. “And what's the most important part of the constitution? It’s the first three words. Literally, the big words. It’s ‘We the people.’ But these days, too many folks think it's we the judges. We need a majority on our supreme court that understands a judge's role is to defend the constitution.”
