Students parking near campus this year will face a heftier fine for violations and, in some areas, shorter parking times.

Over the summer, the Town of Elon Board of Aldermen voted to increase all parking fines from $10 to $25. The board also redesigned some spaces - including ones along Lebanon Avenue - that were formerly two-hour spaces to one-hour slots.

The shift is not designed to target students, according to Town of Elon Police Chief Cliff Parker, who said the increased fines and shorter spaces will keep things moving for local merchants.

"This is to give students a heads-up," Parker said. "Over the summer, the town-side met with merchants to come up with the best plan for parking to be able to meet the needs of retail and the eating establishments."
