Football falls to Citadel after crawling back from big deficit

The Elon University football team lost 38-24 to The Citadel Saturday afternoon. The loss puts the Phoenix at 3-6 overall and 1-5 in the Southern Conference, guaranteeing Elon with a losing season both overall and in-conference. The Citadel running back Darien Robinson led the Bulldogs on a big rushing day as they put up 366 total rushing yards.

Swepson: Rhodes Stadium felt "like a coffin" last Saturday

Elon University head football coach Jason Swepson said Rhodes Stadium, the home of the Phoenix, “felt like a coffin” during last Saturday’s 31-17 loss to Furman University, a loss that knocked Elon out of any shot of playoff contention. “We just didn’t create our own energy,” Swepson said after the lackluster performance against the Paladins.

Elon's playoff chances fade with 31-17 loss to Furman

So much so that Saturday’s 31-17 loss to Furman University has knocked the Phoenix from playoff contention. “(Furman) knew they could run the ball on us and we got exposed,” Elon head coach Jason Swepson said following the game.

Phoenix withstands second half charge by Western Carolina, earns first SoCon win

Once again, the Elon University football team, this time fresh off a bye week, held a lead early in a Southern Conference game. But for the first time this season, the Phoenix was able to hold onto that lead, clinging to a lead that looked like it was going to slip away in the second half when the Western Carolina University Catamounts scored three straight touchdowns. But the final score read: Elon 42, Western Carolina 31. Elon senior quarterback Thomas Wilson was 20-for-28 for 412 yards and a career-high five touchdown passes to help lead the Phoenix (3-4, 1-3) to its first SoCon victory this season. “It’s huge for the team overall, for our confidence, for our morale,” said Elon sophomore linebacker Jonathan Spain.

It may be easy to start the retelling of Elon University's 35-23 loss to No. 14 Appalachian State University Saturday at Kidd Brewer Stadium in Boone, N.C., with a reminder that the Phoenix is now 2-4 this season overall, 0-3 in the Southern Conference. There is a sense in which the same thing is attacking them, at least in the last two weeks. Unfortunately for the Phoenix, those attacking them have more bite than the Rack. Elon faces the battering triple-option, run-first offense for the second week in a row in this week's opponent, the Wofford College Terriers.

Elon University names first-ever nominated student commencement speaker

Grace Ackermann was driving to Boston for apartment hunting when she got the call from Elon University President Connie Book saying that she would be the student commencement speaker for the graduating class of 2024. In the past, the speaker has always been the student body president, but in February 2024, the Student Government Association changed the requirements. This new change allowed for all seniors to apply for the speaker position — granting the final decision to a special committee composed of SGA members and students. With graduation on May 24, Ackermann said she is excited for the opportunity to speak for the class of 2024.

Elon University hosts record-breaking SURF Day

Elon University’s annual Spring Undergraduate Research Forum had record-breaking participation this year. There were a total of 322 presentations this year, a 19% jump from last year and the highest in the forum’s 31 year history. According to Jen Hamel, associate director of undergraduate research, this is the result of an upward trend she has noticed over the past several years. Hamel attributes this growth to increased participation in SURF from the School of Communications and the Martha and Spencer Love School of Business. The 322 presentations were divided into 168 poster presentations, 154 oral presentations and 35 creative performances.
