Everyone has the right to voice an opinion on the hot-button topics in our society. But just because you can say something doesn’t mean you should. And especially if you’re the head of a large corporation, it’s usu- ally to your benefit to keep your musings about social issues to yourself.

As May 8 approaches, elections aren’t the only things state officials are worrying about. The North Carolina General Assembly is in the midst of a battle to override Gov. Beverly Perdue’s veto of a law that would require citizens to present photo identification before being able to vote. The law is only a few votes away from passing.
Elon University’s human donor lab, often referred to as the cadaver lab, may give some students chills, but this facility in the basement of McMichael Science Center offers students a unique learning opportunity to explore human anatomy as undergraduates.
This week I wrote a story on Holocaust Remembrance Week (Apr. 15-22), and I just wanted to share a story that I shared with a few of the people I interviewed for the story.
The reading of the names of Holocaust victims revealed a connection to the past, according to Phil Smith, associate chaplain and director of Religious Life at Elon University. While students, faculty and staff read the names aloud outside Moseley April 19 during the internationally recognized day for Holocaust Remembrance, many others walked past and continued with their normal business. Some of the students who did notice only stopped and listened to the names for a minute or two.
Ann Cahill, professor of philosophy and Elon’s Distinguished Scholar 2011-12, spoke to students and faculty Tuesday about complex philosophical issues, equating the feeling after a miscarriage to the moment an individual expects to find another step after having already reached the top of a staircase. Smith Residence Hall has had seven cases of theft as of March 16. Items that have been stolen include four iPods, three Macbooks, two iPads, a watch, a pair of headphones, an IBM laptop and a wallet containing a debit card, a driver’s license and an ID card. The idea that students’ property is entirely safe has been questioned by residents of Smith residence hall over the course of this semester. Smith residents, including freshmen Bill Webb and Stephen Rittersbach, are frustrated with the situation.
President Leo Lambert's journey to Elon University had always been marked by students.
Two Elon freshmen were arrested Saturday in Barney dorm on four charges of drug paraphernalia each. They were scheduled for a first appearance in court this past Monday.
This week, I did a story about Team Hero. Team Hero is an organization that helps serve military veterans as well as active duty soldiers by providing support and working to fund a guide dog for returning soldiers with PTSD through another organization called Paws and Stripes.
This week, I realized that most people don’t have an opinion (or have much to say) on an issue unless you put them in a spot where they really have to think about it and come up with an answer.
Heat, sun and a 35 pound rucksack were the only things standing between the Bataan March participants and their goal. That and 26.2 miles.
As campus develops, one piece needs to be complete before construction on another can begin.
It began with a news brief. One short article from an online newsletter about Paws and Stripes, an organization that trains service dogs to give to returning military veterans, caught Elon University’s senior Clara Martin’s eye last year. She has dedicated herself to working with veterans since. Martin, an exercise science major, founded Elon’s new organization Team Hero in 2011 to help raise awareness about the lives of veterans and soldiers and raise money for a guide dog for a veteran through Paws and Stripes.
