The Elon University men’s tennis team closed out the regular season in style with a 6-1 win against East Carolina University and swept the top five singles positions.

The Phoenix started hot by winning the doubles point. Seniors Stefan Fortmann and Brian Kowalski beat junior Tendai Tapfuma and senior Patriek Wolterbeek 6-3 at No. 1 doubles while redshirt freshman Neal Port and sophomore Chris Humphreys clinched the point with a 6-1 win over seniors Nicolas Soriano and Damien Brenard at No. 3 doubles.

Seniors Fortmann, Kaufman and Kowalski all earned singles victories for the Phoenix. Fortmann defeated Soriano in straight sets 6-3, 6-1 at No. 1 singles. Kaufman defeated Tapfuma  6-2, 6-1 at No. 2 singles for his 12th singles win of the year. Kowalski needed a super tiebreaker to earn his victory, outlasting Colin Roller 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (6).

Junior Robert Lindgren earned a win for Elon at No. 3 singles with a 6-3, 7-5 while freshman Josh Luck earned Elon’s fifth win by defeating freshman Kasey Countee at No. 5 singles. The two split the first sets but Luck won the super tiebreaker to notch a 7-6 (3), 2-6, 1-0 (4) win.

Elon finishes the regular season with a 9-12 record while East Carolina finishes at 11-12. The Phoenix will await the matchups for the Colonial Athletic Association Men’s Tennis Championships, which begins on Friday in Williamsburg, Virginia.
