Elon survives Towson to advance to CAA quarterfinals

[youtube=] BALTIMORE -- The Elon University men's basketball team survived a late scare from Towson in the first round of the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament, escaping Royal Farms Arena with a 74-69 overtime victory on Friday night. With two seconds left in regulation and the game knotted at 62 apiece, Elon senior guard Austin Hamilton launched an open jumper from the free throw line to win the game, but it fell just short, hitting the front of the rim, the backboard and teasing the Elon bench before it fell off the rim. "It didn't go in, we wanted it to go in and avoid overtime, but that's just the way the ball falls sometimes," Hamilton said.

The Elon softball team claimed a 3-2 win over NC State on Wednesday evening. The win puts them at 9-4 on the season, NC State falls to 7-7. Freshman Kiandra Mitchum (5-2) pitched for her second win in two days, allowing just four hits and two runs.

Coach Matheny's daughter cheers Men's Basketball team to victory

[youtube=] The Elon University cheerleading team welcomed an unofficial member this basketball season. Five-year old Ava Matheny, daughter of Elon head men's basketball coach Matt Matheny has been suiting up in maroon and gold, and melting the hearts of Phoenix fans throughout Alumni Gym. "Its cool after games just to see people say I watched your daughter and she's the cutest thing in the world," Coach Matheny said. Ava got her start in cheerleading in November after spending the last few years watching from the stands. "After a few years of sitting in the stands, she decided she wanted to try [cheerleading]," Ava's mom Jennifer Matheny said.

Elon takes down Northeastern for second consecutive win

"Pound the rock." That's been the message that Elon University basketball coach Matt Matheny has been telling his team all year. And after snapping a seven-game losing streak on Saturday against Delaware, the Phoenix continued to chip away at that rock with a 72-65 win over preseason Colonial Athletic Association favorite Northeastern.
