Men's basketball extends win streak to six at UNC-Asheville

The Elon University men's basketball team continued its winning ways, extending its win streak to six in a 86-81 victory over the University of North Carolina at Asheville Monday. The Phoenix made six straight free throws in the final 15 seconds to ice the tightly-contested game over the Bulldogs, who also entered Monday with a five-game winning streak.

Men's basketball storms out to early lead in 4th straight win

The Elon University men’s basketball team stormed out of the gates against Alabama State University Wednesday, scoring the first 14 points of the game en route to a 91-74 victory. The win is the fourth straight for Elon and fifth in the last six games, Senior guard Tanner Samson hit four straight 3-pointers to start the game, building the lead out to 12-0 in just 130 seconds. Junior guard Luke Eddy added a layup to make it 14-0 before the Hornets scored their first points of the game.

Men's basketball sails to easy win over D3 school

In the first game after finals, the Elon University men’s basketball team rolled to a 106-77 victory over Division III Wesley College Sunday, Dec. 13. The Phoenix scored 64 points in the second half, with the scoring for the afternoon contest being spread across 12 players. In total, 16 of the 17 players on Elon’s roster saw action Sunday.

Women's basketball knocks off NC State

The Elon University women’s basketball team pulled off an upset Sunday, Dec. 13, defeating North Carolina State University 69-66 in a close game. It's the first win over NC State in program history after the Phoenix lost the previous eight games to the Wolfpack. The first game after a break for finals, which was played at Broughton High School in Raleigh due to renovations at NC State’s Reynolds Coliseum, was tightly contested all afternoon, with neither team leading by more than three points at the end of each quarter.

Late burst of layups leads men's basketball past FIU

The Elon University men’s basketball team rode the coattails of a 10-0 run by junior guard/forward Christian Hairston out of the final media timeout to defeat Florida International University 77-71 Friday night in Miami. Hairston made five layups in a two-minute, 23-second span to turn a six-point deficit into a four-point lead for Elon.

Keeping the soccer dream alive

Elon University men’s soccer freshman midfielder Bill Beresford was in the 18-man match day roster for Chesterfield Football Club against Peterborough United Football Club in a League One contest on Boxing Day 2014 – the British equivalent of playing football on Thanksgiving. “I warmed up and to be fair, I actually thought I was going to come on and make my debut,” Beresford said. “I was gutted it didn’t end up that way.” Chesterfield were cruising in the match winning 3-0 against Peterborough and Beresford could sense it was his time. “There was 20 minutes to go and we had a really good chance, we should have scored but one of the lads put it over the bar,” he said. “They ended up going down the other end and scoring.”

Men's soccer eliminated in second round of NCAA Tournament

The Elon University men's soccer team lost to Clemson University 5-2 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament Sunday. The defeat ends the season for the team, who finished with a 14-6-1 record. The Tigers were led by senior forward T.J. Casner, who scored a goal in each half. His second goal gave Clemson its first 3-goal lead of the match. Elon responded immediately thanks to freshman forward Jaiden Fortune, who scored less than one minute after Casner’s second goal.

Seniors power Elon past Winthrop in 3-0 win

The Elon University men's soccer team racked up the goals in a big 3-0 win over Winthrop on Thursday night in the first round of the NCAA Soccer Championship. The win was an emphatic way to snap a streak in which the Phoenix had lost four of its last five games, and sets up Elon to play Clemson in the second round of the tournament on Sunday evening. After a back and forth contest for most of the first half, Elon senior James Brace opened the scoring by sliding into a Jaiden Fortune cross from the right wing and pushing the ball past the keeper. "When you can go into halftime in the lead, that always helps," Brace said.

Football attempts to move on to ‘new normalcy’

The Elon University football team returned to campus late Saturday night after defeating the University of Maine 27-22 earlier in the day. The conclusion to a week of unimaginable tragedy — the death of junior wide receiver Demitri Allison — had ended in triumph. But for head coach Rich Skrosky, recalling the week that was has left some words lingering in his mind. “One of the coaches — and so many coaches reached out — not to say anyone specific, but a name most people would know, his words were, ‘This week will be harder than last,’” Skrosky said, then paused, letting the words hang in the air.
