The Elon University baseball team lost both games on Saturday’s doubleheader against Wright State University, 13-11 in 10 innings and 10-2. The three losses to start the season gives Elon its first 0-3 start since 1983, when Elon lost its first four games of the season.
The Elon University women’s tennis team couldn’t get enough wins in the singles, falling to Florida Gulf Coast University 4-3 Friday afternoon. “We’re making some strides," said head coach Elizabeth Anderson. "We’ve played a really tough schedule, so that makes it a little more challenging, but I think it will pay off for us in the long run." Elon dropped the doubles point, but freshman Suzanne Zenoni got the Phoenix on the board with her win over sophomore Julianna Curtis in straight sets 6-2, 6-1.
The Elon University baseball team’s 9-7 opening day defeat to Wright State University capitulated in the top of the 7th inning. Entering the frame with a four run lead, a trio of Elon relief pitchers allowed six runs on four hits and three walks to give Wright State a lead it would not surrender. “Their bullpen threw a lot of strikes and made some good pitches,” said senior first baseman Tyler McVicar.

A hot-shooting second half led the Elon University men’s basketball team to an 81-76 victory over Drexel University Thursday night in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) play. The Phoenix shot 75 percent in the second half, finishing 18-of-24 from the field and 6-of-8 from behind the arc.

As a new season approaches for the Elon University baseball team, head coach Mike Kennedy has noticed something about this group of players that makes them stand out from his previous teams at Elon. “We have more baseball rats,” Kennedy said.

Fomer Elon University men’s soccer head coach Darren Powell signed two former Elon players — defender Sam McBride and midfielder Miguel Salazar — to contracts with San Antonio FC, the club announced Monday. Powell was named head coach of the expansion club in January, and the two former players will play in the United Soccer League (USL) for San Antonio FC, which is the third tier of the soccer system in the United States. “We are very happy for both Miguel and Sam to realize their dream as professional players,” said Elon head coach Chris Little.

The Elon University women’s lacrosse team isn’t young anymore. At least, not in terms of experience. The Phoenix enters its third year of competition (its second in the Colonial Athletic Association) after an encouraging 2015 campaign that included a CAA Rookie of the Year performance by now-sophomore midfielder Stephanie Asher. Elon also has a wealth of experience, something that wasn’t the case for the past two years as it built the program.
