Closing the gap between job needs and getting degrees

Just over a week ago, business policy group ReadyNation released a report saying Illinois could be short 150,000 qualified workers in a variety of fields by the year 2020. ReadyNation says the number 150,000 comes from the fact that 69 percent of the 2.3 million job openings in Illinois require postsecondary education, but only 62 percent of Illinoisans have reached this level of education, creating a 7 percent gap — or 150,000 workers. Inevitably, this is a situation that brings a plethora of economic issues for the state of Illinois, such as making the state less competitive, and the apparent solution, according to Sean Noble, state director of ReadyNation, is putting more funds into early childhood education.

Aaron Mellette Returns to the NFL

Former Elon football player Aaron Mellette is back in the National Football League. The two-time first team FCS All-American announced Monday evening that he signed a deal with the New York Jets via Instagram. "\0x2028All I can say is how blessed I am for being afforded another chance to pursue my dream" he wrote as the caption.

The men's and women's soccer teams are in spring training to gear up for the fall season, but over spring break, the men traveled to Spain while the women headed off to Costa Rica for an athletic and cultural experience of a lifetime. Spring football jeopardizes players’ health

The crunch of the fall leaves and the brisk wind blowing as the sun sets are sentiments usually associated with football season. Not the chirping of birds and spring flowers. On the road against Citadel, The Elon University baseball team had 18 hits in its dominating 12-3 victory over the Bulldogs at Riley Park on Friday, March 6. Four Elon starters had at least three hits with three starters contributing two RBIs to bring the Phoenix to 7-3 on the season.

Elon defeats Coastal Carolina after four games on the road

The Elon Women's Lacrosse team defeated Coastal Carolina 11-6 on Friday night after returning to Rhodes Stadium after four games on the road. The Phoenix went into halftime up by just one point (4-3), but came out strong in the second half outscoring the Chanticleers by 4. Elon was not afraid to take shots, taking 23, 17 of which were on goal.

Elon survives Towson to advance to CAA quarterfinals

With two seconds left in regulation and the game knotted at 62 apiece, Elon senior guard Austin Hamilton launched an open jumper from the free throw line to win the game, but it fell just short, hitting the front of the rim, the backboard and teasing the Elon bench before it fell off the rim. "It didn't go in, we wanted it to go in and avoid overtime, but that's just the way the ball falls sometimes," Hamilton said.

Elon softball holds off ACC foe, NC State

The Elon softball team claimed a 3-2 win over NC State on Wednesday evening. The win puts them at 9-4 on the season, NC State falls to 7-7. Freshman Kiandra Mitchum (5-2) pitched for her second win in two days, allowing just four hits and two runs.

Coach Matheny's daughter cheers Men's Basketball team to victory

Five-year old Ava Matheny, daughter of Elon head men's basketball coach Matt Matheny has been suiting up in maroon and gold, and melting the hearts of Phoenix fans throughout Alumni Gym. "Its cool after games just to see people say I watched your daughter and she's the cutest thing in the world," Coach Matheny said. Ava got her start in cheerleading in November after spending the last few years watching from the stands. "After a few years of sitting in the stands, she decided she wanted to try [cheerleading]," Ava's mom Jennifer Matheny said.
