The push for bail reform in Alamance County

SGA passes bill to replace Safe Rides with Uber

In the first phase of the pilot program beginning after Spring Break, students will get two discounted Uber rides to anywhere geographically close to campus. It will replicate the range of Safe Rides, with off-campus housing along with Crest and Danieley included.

Early primary voting begins across North Carolina

The North Carolina primary is here. Voters can indicate their preference for their party’s candidate. For voters looking to participate prior to the primary date, early voting is an alternative solution. This process has been known to decrease lines and encourage voter participation. Any person looking to participate must be registered to vote in the state of North Carolina, no photo ID is required.

SGA treasurer, finance board amend treasurer’s manual

Throughout Winter Term, Amanda Yaffa, senior and executive treasurer of Elon University’s Student Government Association, will draft changes to the treasurer’s manual with the finance board. Yaffa said she hopes to see the changes implemented in the spring semester when she said SGA will likely vote on the issue at the first or second business meeting in February.

College students react to the Democratic debate

The final Democratic debate before the Iowa caucuses, hosted by CNN and the Des Moines Register, was held at Drake University on Jan. 14. Even though most Drake students were unable to attend the debate, candidates and student groups hosted multiple watch parties in and around the campus.

Elon University hires first associate provost for inclusive excellence

Elon University hires communications professor Naeemah Clark as the first associate provost for academic inclusive excellence. The new role will be responsible for promoting inclusivity in academic spaces, supporting diverse faculty and guiding campus initiatives and programs. Clark has previously chaired the Core Curriculum council and directed the School of Communications Fellows Program, as well as served in the LGBTQIA advisory council, the inclusive community council and the task force for LGBTQIA faculty, staff and students.

Burlington Police Department selects next police chief

The Burlington Police Department selects Burlington native Alan Balog as its next police chief. Balog has worked in law enforcement for 18 years. In his current role, he oversees patrol, criminal investigations and 911 dispatching. Throughout his career, he has served in supervisory roles within the patrol, criminal investigations and professional standards divisions. Balog is set to take over after current Police Chief Brian Long retires in June.
