Rep. Ted Budd and Navy veteran Scott Huffman face off in U.S. House 13th District race

Two-term U.S. Rep. Ted Budd, a Republican, is being challenged by Democrat Scott Huffman, a Navy veteran and small business owner, to represent North Carolina’s 13th District in the U.S. House of Representatives. Budd was first elected in 2016 — winning 56% of the vote — and won reelection in 2018. Huffman has never held public office, and this is his first time running.

NC Senate District 24 candidates fight to serve Alamance, Guilford County

Republican Amy Galey and Democrat JD Wooten are facing off to win the North Carolina State Senate District 24 seat this November, covering Alamance and part of Guilford County. With incumbent Rick Gunn (R) having stepped down after his 2018 term in office, both Galey and Wooten would be serving in this role for the first time if elected.

Board of Aldermen consider university proposal to close East Haggard Avenue

Elon University President Connie Book addressed the Board of Aldermen regarding a university proposal to temporarily close East Haggard Ave at the agenda setting meeting on Monday. The proposal submitted by the university suggested using the street to increase outdoor space for recreational and educational purposes. Book also said safety concerns are another reason to close the street.

Guide to absentee voting in Alamance County, North Carolina

Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, election officials have considered many aspects of voting to ensure safe elections in 2020, according to Benjamin Ansbacher, chairman of the Alamance County Board of Elections. Ansbacher spoke with Elon News Network and offered what he believes students need to know about absentee voting and mail-in ballots in North Carolina for Election Day 2020.

SGA hosts fireside chat with President Book to discuss student concerns

On Wednesday evening, Elon University’s Student Government Association hosted a fireside chat featuring President Connie Book with questions moderated by Vice President for Student Life Jon Dooley. Throughout the chat, Book answered pre-submitted questions as well as live questions from student government representatives and other Elon community members.

North Carolina to move into Phase 3 of reopening Friday

North Carolina will move “cautiously” to Phase 3 of reopening beginning on Friday, Oct. 2 at 5 p.m., Gov. Roy Cooper said at a press briefing today. The Phase 3 executive order will remain in effect until Oct. 23 at 5 p.m. It comes as the number of new coronavirus cases has leveled in North Carolina after a spike in August, according to Secretary of the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services Mandy Cohen.

Democrats Bob Byrd, Dreama Caldwell and Kristen Powers will battle three Republican candidates in the November general election for three open seats on the Alamance County Board of Commissioners.The Board of Commissioners is composed of five elected officials who serve as the governing body of Alamance County. Board members serve four-year terms, and elections for the board are held every even-numbered year.

SGA town hall focuses on issues of diversity on campus

Elon University’s Student Government Association met for a virtual town hall on the issue of diversity, equity and inclusion on campus on Thursday evening. Junior Malia Takei moderated the town hall, which featured Vice President and Associate Provost for Inclusive Excellence Randy Williams,  Vice President for Student Life Jon Dooley and Director of the Center for Equity and Inclusive Excellence Leigh-Anne Royster.

SGA aims to increase student awareness under Cote Administration

After 20.4% of the student body voted in the 2024-25 student body elections — compared to the 29.9% that voted in the 2023-24 elections — junior Ella Kucera, vice president of communications, said she hopes to increase awareness of the function of Elon University’s Student Government Association. With the decrease in voter turnout for this past election, members of SGA, both current and former, said they hope they can increase voter turnout in future elections by educating the student body about what student government does and making itself more present on campus.

Elon Performing Arts presents “Myths and Hymns” for spring musical

After learning “Myths and Hymns” would be the spring musical, Elon professor and director Alexandra Joye Warren knew she would have to add some sort of story into the song cycle. Song cycles are a group of individually complete songs designed to be performed in a sequence without having an overarching narrative. “Myths and Hymns” will be performed at 7:30 p.m. on April 26, at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on April 27 and at 2 p.m. on April 28 in Roberts Studio Theatre in Scott Studios. Tickets are $15 at the door or free with an Elon ID.
