Reload, not rebuild: so far, so good for Elon baseball

When Elon University head baseball coach Mike Kennedy was asked about the 17 new players on his 2014 team, he refused to say that they were part of a rebuilding year. Instead, Kennedy said that his team went out to “reload” for a run at a fifth Southern Conference regular season or third Southern Conference tournament championship.

Leathers' clutch hit pushes Elon past UNCW

Elon University junior Wil Leathers had a feeling he would be pinch-hitting in the eighth inning for the Phoenix baseball team. Elon coach Mike Kennedy knew a fastball would be thrown to him at some point. That prior knowledge led to a bloop single into left field from Leathers, scoring senior second baseman Sebastian Gomez and giving the Phoenix a 3-2 win over the University of North Carolina at Wilmington Feb.

Elon pitchers show promise in sweep of Wagner

Uncertainty filled the start of the Elon University baseball season, with a roster that sported 16 new faces. Junior Jake Stalzer, a transfer from Indian Hills Community College in Iowa, is beginning to prove that he’s one piece to the puzzle in putting the Phoenix back together. Stalzer threw his second gem of the week, pitching seven innings of three-hit ball with no runs allowed and three strikeouts in Elon’s 7-3 win over Wagner College Feb.

In his second career start at Elon University, junior pitcher Lucas Bakker threw seven innings with nine strikeouts, only allowing a single run, leading the Phoenix to an 11-1 victory over Wagner College (0-2) Feb.

Elon takes second game, series against Cincinnati

The Elon University baseball team took the latter end of a two-game series with the University of Cincinnati, topping the Bearcats 3-1 at North Carolina State University. Junior Jake Stalzer went seven innings on the hill to earn the win, allowing one unearned run on six hits with four strikeouts.

Lynch's walk-off in extras lifts Elon over Cincinnati

RALEIGH — Amid a bizarre week filled with snow and postponements, the sense of unpredictability hung around the Elon University baseball team during its season opener against the University of Cincinnati. With new players filling big shoes and others stepping up, the Phoenix earned a 6-5 victory in 10 innings at Doak Field at Dail Park on the campus of North Carolina State University. After surrendering a three-run lead with two outs in the ninth, it was sophomore catcher Danny Lynch who came through with a double to centerfield to score junior designated hitter Chris King in the bottom of the tenth for the victory. Lynch jumped on a two-strike changeup after a pitch that Lynch said hit him, but the umpires did not see. “I was just looking for a pitch to drive,” Lynch said.

Elon baseball moves games to NC State

The Elon University athletic department announced Saturday, February 15, that this weekend's baseball series against the University of Cincinnati will be played at North Carolina State University. Due to the recent inclement weather, the playing surface at Latham Park is still unplayable, Elon announced.

Budding Elon baseball team aims to continue tradition

There used to be a commercial for ESPNU that used the slogan, “Tradition never graduates.” The Elon University baseball team may have lost 16 players from last year’s Southern Conference Tournament champion squad, but that’s not an excuse to stop adding to the rich tradition of the program. “We don’t want to rebuild,” said Mike Kennedy, Elon head coach.

Reigning SoCon Tournament champion Elon baseball releases 2014 schedule

Building off a Southern Conference Tournament Championship and an NCAA Tournament berth a year ago, the Elon University baseball team has released another challenging slate for the 2014 season. Head coach Mike Kennedy’s team went 34-31 in 2013, defeating The Citadel in the SoCon Championship game and advancing to the Charlottesville Regional of the NCAA Tournament.

Rivera's impact on baseball isn't just on the field

Nobody does it bigger than the New York Yankees. They have the biggest payroll in Major League Baseball, which stood at $228,995,945 entering the 2013 season, the most World Series championships in the history of the game with 27 and the highest luxury tax year-in and year-out. They also send players out with dazzling celebrations and honors, just like what happened with Mariano Rivera this year. Known as one of the "Core Four" players for years with the Yankees, paired with shortstop Derek Jeter, pitcher Andy Pettitte and retired catcher Jorge Posada, Rivera and Pettitte decided 2013 would be their last hurrah in the league and would retire at the end of the year. Rivera leaves the game as the all-time saves leader, notching 652 saves through 19 seasons with the Yankees.

Furman torches Elon in tournament opener

Elon University senior starting pitcher Kyle Webb was a perfect 6-0 in Southern Conference play this season, making him a clear choice to start Wednesday’s SoCon tournament opener against host Furman University in Greenville, S.C. The Phoenix fell behind on runs in each of the first three innings and couldn’t recover, dropping the opener of the tournament 10-1. After a delay with one out in the top of the first inning due to lightning in the area, the game resumed after Will Muzika singled and scored on a triple to center from Greg Harrison. Chris Ohmstede put Furman up 2-0 with a one-out home run to left field in the top of the second.
