Solid pitching gets Elon baseball its first win of the season

The Elon University baseball team (1-3) got into the win column for the first time in the young season, beating Radford University 2-1 Tuesday afternoon at Latham Park. Sophomore right-hander Mason Daniels took to the bump for the first time this season for the Phoenix. In his first game action since 2016, missing last season following Tommy John surgery, he completed 3.0 innings of work.

After finishing last season with a 24-32 (12-12 in conference) record, the Elon University baseball team looks to make some desperate changes to their process to prevent capturing the fourth consecutive losing season under the leadership of head coach Mike Kennedy.  Kennedy, who graduated from Elon in 1991, enters his 22nd season as the head coach at his alma mater. With a career record of 678-524-3 (.564), Kennedy has won the most games in program history as head coach, but he will have to make some changes to halt the skid.

Club baseball finds triumph in tragedy

Four months after Elon University was left in shock following the suicide of junior Breslin Wiley,  the team is practicing with a different mentality than in years before.  Many of those closest to Wiley were his friends and fellow teammates on the club baseball team who were left to console one another. They’re approaching each day with a new appreciation for life and love for one another that they will never take for granted.

Freshman pitcher Brnovich earning his stripes

Often it takes freshman athletes time before they make their presence felt on the field. Sometimes they’re redshirted or sometimes they simply must wait for their time to come. But don’t tell Kyle Brnovich that. The freshman pitcher on Elon University’s baseball team is already making an impact on a team that has suddenly found a need for better performances on the mound. Though he had a relatively slow start to the season, Brnovich has arguably been the Phoenix best starting pitcher.

Phoenix sweeps JMU with complete game shutout from freshman Brnovich

The Elon University Baseball team defeated James Madison University by a score of 3-0 on Sunday afternoon at Latham Park, sweeping the Dukes in their three game series, extending a winning streak to six. Although the Phoenix won the first two games of the series in high-scoring affairs, Sunday’s game was decidedly a pitching duel.

Baseball seeking balance between strong pitching, struggling offense

As the Elon University baseball team concludes its first month of play, a happy medium between offense and pitching has yet to be reached. In a role reversal from previous Elon teams, it’s the pitching that has emerged as the strength of this year’s club, with a team ERA of 4.11 checking in at nearly two and a half runs lower than last year.

Elon's offense turned in the right direction in the late innings of a 5-1 victory against the University of Massachusetts, a performance the Phoenix hopes translates into a stronger approach at the plate in the coming weeks.

Shumate's single ends Elon's 5-game losing streak

Senior infielder Kory Shumate's walk-off single ended the Elon University baseball team's five-game losing streak, capping off Elon's 4-3 comeback win over the University of Massachusetts at Amherst (UMass) Friday night at Latham Park. With the score tied at three, runners on first and second base and two outs, Shumate — who had started the night 0-for-3 — kept his composure to drop a walk-off single in deep right field, scoring freshman infielder Joe Satterfield and sending all of Elon's players racing to mob Shumate.

No-hitter signals Welhaf's comeback

The Elon University baseball team’s Saturday afternoon game against Longwood University was still in progress, the unspeakable performance of redshirt junior pitcher Robbie Welhaf nearing completion. And yet, even though there was no guarantee Welhaf would be able to finish off Elon’s first no-hitter since joining Division I, head coach Mike Kennedy almost was overcome with emotions. “[Assistant coach] Robbie [Huffstetler] and I are sitting here and I’m trying to make sure I don’t bust out in tears because you’re happy for a guy that sticks with it,” Kennedy said.

Welhaf throws 1st no-hitter in Elon D1 era

Redshirt junior pitcher Robbie Welhaf threw the first no-hitter in the Elon University baseball team’s Division I era Saturday afternoon, needing 100 pitches to beat Longwood University 7-0 at Latham Park. Welhaf struck out a career-high eight in Elon’s 7-0 win over Longwood, with just a walk and a hit-by-pitch against him.

CAA pulls women's golf title from NC because of HB2

The Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) has made its first major move in response to North Carolina’s House Bill 2, moving its neutral-site 2017 women’s golf championship out of the state. And, while Elon University released its 2017 football schedule with a game against the State University of New York at Albany Sept. 30, Commissioner Joe D’Antonio said in a phone call that the issue is not fully resolved.

2024 Earth Week keynote speaker offers advice on coping with climate anxiety

Britt Wray, author of “Generation Dread: Finding Purpose in the Age of Climate Anxiety,” spoke to Elon University on April 24 as the 2024 keynote speaker for Earth week. Wray began by linking the idea that major fossil fuel companies, powerful lawyers and lobbyists choose to ignore damages inflicted by businesses. These efforts, according to Wray, have hindered people from taking action to stop them — which Wray deemed a global crime scene. She said by 2070, an estimated 19% of the planet will be inhabitable due to increases in global warming.

Office of sustainability hosts events across campus

Elon’s office of sustainability plans events throughout the year in collaboration with other student organizations, according to Kelly Harer, associate director of sustainability for education and outreach. Elon is focusing on improving sustainability efforts specifically waste reduction. A system Elon uses to measure its sustainability efforts is the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment and Rating System. Based on data from Elon’s submission Feb. 11, 2022, which is valid until March 16, 2025, Elon received a silver rating, earning 59.12 points out of 100. The points are broken down in different categories across academics, engagement, operations, planning and administration and innovation and leadership.
