Occupy Graham demonstrators gathered at Sequential Park, commonly called Wyatt Outlaw Park, this evening for their bi-weekly demonstration. The demonstration was held to protest the decision by Elizabeth City sheriff’s deputies and a judge not to release the body camera footage from the shooting of Andrew Brown Jr., as well as the arrest of two protesters in Graham yesterday. The protest was followed by a sit-in at the Graham Soda Shop, which is located to the left of the park and the Confederate monument in front of the courthouse.

Jason Husser, professor of political science and policy studies, will be the chair of the Academic Council for the 2021-22 academic year. Husser, who is also the director of Elon Poll, was voted in unanimously and will be taking over from Paula Patch, who stepped away from the position to focus on her role as assistant director of the Elon core curriculum.

Emily Sharpe loves to walk through downtown Elon. From visiting local businesses to enjoying the outdoor seating and Carolina blue skies, Sharpe said she often finds herself downtown at least once, if not twice a day. When Sharpe saw both frontline workers and the downtown businesses struggling at the beginning of the pandemic, she wanted to do something.

The Board of Aldermen discussed adopting a local non-discrimination ordinance at the regular meeting held April 13. At the meeting, the Aldermen approved the addition of Elon University Dean of Student Development Jodean Schmiederer to the arts advisory board and heard from Jeff Stein, chair of Ready & Resilient Committee, regarding the university COVID-19 update.

Joseph LeMire began his new role as Elon University’s new chief of campus safety and police on March 29. LeMire entered the field 28 years ago after he was inspired in high school by his uncle, who worked for the Chicago Police Department. LeMire comes to Elon from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, where he served as the chief of police and the incident commander for COVID-19 response.

The Board of Aldermen discussed the town of Elon’s executive order for mass gathering limits at their March 9 meeting. The board also discussed Elon University’s financial contribution to the town, which includes $80,000 annually to the fire department with a 2% increase each year to account for inflation.

Joseph LeMire will serve as Elon University’s chief of campus safety and police starting March 29. The university chose the former University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee police chief after restarting the search process in the fall. The first search was conducted last spring, but was paused and ultimately stopped due to the coronavirus pandemic.
