Senior cross country runner Allyson Oram has been a real trailblazer during the 2013 Elon University cross country season. The Marlborough, Mass. native has been the first Elon runner to cross the finish line in all four races she participated in, finishing in the top 10 in two of them. Oram has been inspired to end her Elon career on a high note and has done so in her senior season.

The Elon University women’s basketball team went on the road and defeated future conference rival in the Colonial Athletic Association, the University of North Carolina at Wilmington Wednesday, Nov. 13, by a score of 75-64.

Last Saturday, FC Barcelona cruised to a routine victory over Real Betis by a score of 4-1. On paper, it seemed like a typical contest in Spain’s La Liga. Barcelona was able to extend its unbeaten start to the 2013-2014 season and made easy work of the bottom team in the league. However, one massive incident during the first half could change the rest of the club season and even potentially this summer’s World Cup in Brazil. In the 21st minute, four-time FIFA Ballon d’Or Lionel Messi was subbed off with a leg injury.

The Elon University women’s basketball team edged out the Winston-Salem State University Rams in its season opener 73-68 on Friday, Nov. 8. Senior guard Kelsey Harris led the way for the Phoenix with 18 points and seven assists, while junior forward Sam Coffer chipped in with a double-double tallying 14 points and grabbing 14 rebounds.

Collegiate sports teams across the country have to cope with the loss of seniors on a yearly basis, and the Elon University women’s basketball team is no different. This year, the Phoenix will be without arguably two of the best players the program has ever seen: forward Kelsey Evans and guard Ali Ford.

The Elon University women’s lacrosse team has released its schedule for their inaugural 2014 season. Competing in the Atlantic Sun Conference, the Phoenix is scheduled to face seven Big South teams and three Atlantic Coast Conference opponents.

The NBA season has just begun, but it hasn’t stopped anybody from trying to nail down title contenders. Even with teams playing less than a half dozen games, you can start to see who is going to be playing relevant basketball come spring. The Western Conference is absolutely wide open. The Eastern Conference still goes through Miami, but the talented trio of Chris Bosh, Dwyane Wade, and LeBron James could be dethroned.

The Elon University women’s basketball team cruised to victory in an exhibition game against the Pfeiffer University Falcons with an 83-38 victory. Sophomore forward Autumn Carter led all scorers with 24 points on 11 of 15 shooting. Carter also grabbed four rebounds and blocked a shot.

Junior Luis Vargas captured a top-three finish at the Southern Conference Cross Country Championship as the Phoenix had a strong showing in Birmingham Ala. The men’s team finished seventh overall while the women’s team finished as runners-up in the event.

Since its creation in 1992, the Premier League has been considered to be the best soccer league in the world. With so many top English teams with the likes of Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool Arsenal and more recently Tottenham Hotspurs and Manchester City, the premier league is loaded with top teams.

Billy Bob Thorton’s character Gary Gaines said in the movie Friday Night Lights, “There ain’t much different between winning and losing.” In Elon’s 20-9 loss to the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Saturday, Oct. 19, there certainly wasn’t a whole lot between the two teams. Elon’s youth was defiantly magnified as the Phoenix struggled in big situations throughout the game.

Peyton Manning will make his highly anticipated return to Indianapolis on Sunday night when his undefeated Denver Broncos go into Lucas Oil Stadium to take on the Indianapolis Colts. Despite a very emotional parting of ways following the 2011 season where Manning sat out the entire season, it is clear that both sides are doing just fine without each other.

After the grueling marathon that is the Major League Baseball regular season, the playoffs are finally upon us. It’s a remarkable feat to go through six months of playing every day and at the end of it, being one of the ten teams to qualify for the postseason. The regular season is all about grinding out wins over the course of series, weeks, and months. But, the postseason is a different brand of baseball where every pitch is huge. At times, it’s difficult watching your team in the playoffs because every pitch can be difference between moving on and going home.
