Danielle Deavens ’16 was Christmas shopping for her family in 2016 with one condition in mind — the gifts must all be from Black-owned businesses. However, Deavens encountered difficulty finding Black-owned businesses to support. Four years later, Deavens and her college sweetheart Doug Spencer ’16 created a solution to this problem by co-founding Bold Xchange, an online retailer that offers an efficient way to discover and shop from a variety of Black-owned products with guaranteed quick shipping.

Alamance County is up against a lawsuit over the Confederate soldier’s monument in Graham. The North Carolina NAACP and other advocacy groups filed the lawsuit in Alamance County Superior Court Tuesday, March 30 to have the monument removed.

The academic experience — all-nighters in the library, lab experiments, class field trips and connecting with professors during office hours — are all aspects of in-person instruction that have been redesigned due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In light of the racial tensions and disparities occurring in the United States, senior Emma McCabe, junior Anne Williams, and executive board members from the physics, biology, chemistry, exercise science and the engineering clubs started the STEM for Black Lives Matter club. The new club emerged on campus in July to promote diversity and advocate against racial disparities in the STEM communities. McCabe said the club’s main goal is to raise awareness to these issues.

Cardboard boat racing, slime-making, and the Pumpkin Chunkin – a competition in which students design a catapult to see who can launch a pumpkin the furthest – are all projects that have been undertaken by Elon Engineers, a small group of students with a passion for engineering.
