Jose Alex Reyes, an incoming freshman and Odyssey Scholar at Elon University, participated in the “It Takes A Village” Project since he was in first grade. The “It Takes A Village” Project is a program where Elon students and other volunteers provide tutoring services to K-12 students in the Alamance-Burlington School System.
Senior Nikki Gupta has not seen her parents in almost two years. When she graduates, her parents, who moved to India from China last year because of the coronavirus pandemic, will not be able to attend. India is currently under lockdown due to a rise in cases of COVID-19.

In 2018, senior Kylee Smith spent the summer interning at Refugee Resettlement, a group which responds to humanitarian crises and helps individuals displaced by international conflict. While there, she was able to build intercultural relationships with Muslim refugees and assist them with adjusting to life in the United States. Smith’s experiences working with refugees shaped her curiosity in learning about the culture of Muslim majority nations and inspired her to research migrants’ process of acculturation to the United States.

Over 800 Meals on Wheels volunteers are traveling around Alamance County to deliver meals to seniors, families, and other individuals who are currently homebound due to the coronavirus pandemic. Social distancing and isolation has created an increased need for residents to receive meals and aid.
