Members of Elon University’s Student Government Association met for a town hall meeting focused on the remembrance of 9/11, 20 years later, on Thursday night. Members heard from Mark Dalhouse, director for global education initiatives, and then gathered in groups to discuss their thoughts about the events on 9/11 and how they connect to current events and issues, such as the pandemic, racial equity and inclusion, and mental health of college students.

Toward the end of their agenda session meeting on Sept. 7, the Town of Elon’s Board of Aldermen went into a closed session to discuss a potential new land acquisition. The property will be the location for the new police station, according to Town Manager Rich Roedner.

As Bob Byrd watched the results of the 2020 Alamance County Commissioner race come in, he realized he had a stronghold over the Burlington precincts. While Byrd lost his bid for a seat on Alamance County’s Board of Commissioners in 2020, he previously held a seat on the Board of Commissioners from 2014 to 2018.

Buffie Longmire-Avital, director of the Black Lumen Project, conducts research about the experiences of Black students, faculty and higher education. Her studies about encounters Black students and faculty face daily with discrimination, microaggressions and racism sparked her interest in diving deeper into conversations about racial equity on college campuses such as Elon.

In efforts to support formerly incarcerated women and advocate for social justice issues in Alamance County, Kristen Powers joined Benevolence Farm as interim executive director. Now, nearly four years later, she hopes to give back to the residents of Benevolence Farm through launching a tiny house initiative — just one more way to get residents back on their feet.

In the coming months, legislators in the North Carolina General Assembly will use redistricting data from the 2020 Census to redraw state congressional districts, state senate districts and state house districts. As Dejuana Bigelow drove through Burlington, she glanced at vibrant buildings surrounded by greenery on one side and “old and dreary buildings” on the other. The contrast between the buildings reminded Bigelow of how she wants to place focus on current issues in the city, such as affordable housing and representation, in her bid for city council.
