The Elon Phoenix finished the first half behind the Campbell University Fighting Camels, 10-7, on Sept. 11, 2021. An unproductive half by both sides led to the low score going into the second half, with the Camels scoring opportunities coming off of a blocked punt and a sack.

Bridget Kanaley and Kelley McCarten, seniors on Elon University women’s cross country team, had the news broken to them in the summer that their season would be delayed. Although tough to accept, Kanaley and McCarten put in perspective that there were bigger issues regarding the COVID-19 pandemic than their season getting delayed.

Elon University associate professor of exercise science Aaron Piepmeier hosts a senior seminar class every year where his students participate in online research with a connection to exercise science, usually with some psychological influences. This year, two of his students, seniors Emily Klevan and Alexandra Smith, are looking into not a physical activity, but a mental strain: “Zoom fatigue.”

The 2019 campaign for the Elon women’s soccer team was a historic one. Making it to the second round of the Colonial Athletic Association Championship tournament for the first time in program history capped off the team’s best season in the conference to date.

In Vice President for Student Life Jon Dooley’s email informing the student body that Elon University would be rising to Level 2, Dooley said that there was an outbreak of the coronavirus among student-athletes. Dooley went further to pinpoint the sports with clusters: football, lacrosse and baseball. The wording of his emails, to two athletes, gives athletics the brunt of the blame for going to level two, something they say is unfair.

Chuck Hannah was just a high schooler when he started to become aware of what “code-switching” was. Growing up in suburban areas, the now-Elon University junior and men’s basketball player found himself changing his appearance and actions to fit in with his peers.

Before Elon University postponed all fall sports via their website, the athletic community received an email from athletic director, Dave Blank. Blank broke the news to the athletes that they would not be having a season this fall, and hoped they would be able to resume come the spring of 2021.

When senior Peter Fortunato first picked up a camera during his internship with the Durham Bulls, it would start a years-long journey that got him to be the new interim video and graphics coordinator for the Elon University athletic department. After working for Elon Athletics — which is under a hiring freeze due to the coronavirus pandemic — for three years as an assistant to the video coordinator, he has been promoted to the leader as the new interim video and graphics coordinator.

The loss of one match ended Elon University women’s tennis teams’ collective dream to make it to the conference title last year. The memory of losing to the College of William & Mary is keeping the team — especially head coach Elizabeth Anderson — motivated to achieve what last year’s team couldn’t.

At the end of a historic season for Elon University’s softball team, head coach Kathy Bocock braced herself to lose seven seniors. Those seniors had been working together for the past four years, and according to Bocock, had a level of comfort with each other that could only come with experience.

The Elon University Phoenix (11-18, 8-9 CAA) faced off against rival James Madison University Dukes (9-17, 2-13 CAA) winning 70-62 on the road. This game marked just the second to last game the Dukes would play in what’s been its home court since 1982. It was also the first game of three on the road for the Phoenix, its final three games before conference tournament play. It's last away excursion proved successful for the Phoenix, winning both games away, and the momentum only continued today.

The first time Charlotte Smith saw an African American female in a position of power was during her days at UNC Chapel Hill, where she attended a Nike All-American camp. Now, Smith is working to be what she saw all those years ago — a role model for young women.
