Junior Ashley Vann struggles to call any North Carolina district lines fair. Vann, delegate chairperson of North Carolina Student Legislature, said as long as the lines are drawn by elected representatives, it's a partisan process.

Senior Emily Katz, event coordinator at Hillel, described her supervisor Hillary Zaken as a “ray of sunshine and color.” She, and the close to 50 other senior student employees present at the supervisor appreciation dinner, talked about how much of an impact her supervisor had on both her Elon experience and life in general. Students had the opportunity to invite their supervisors, who for many of them were someone they’ve worked closely with during their time at Elon.

During their Feb. 17 business meeting, the Elon University Student Government Association passed the election packet and judicial manual for the next senate term, allowing the election process to begin March 1.

Hilary Corna ʼ07 will deliver the Elon University 2022 commencement address. Corna previously gained recognition in 2013 as a part of Elon’s Top 10 Under 10 Alumni Award for landing a senior executive officer position with Toyota and success with her first book, “One White Face."

Clohan dining hall began the year fully plant-based, but as of the start of semester, Clohan has now added a second non-plant based option, a deli station. Early into fall semester, Clohan added their burger bar, a station that was previously available last year. Freshman Ashley Josey, pescetarian and frequenter of Clohan dining hall, is hopeful that the deli station will increase options for students who eat meat without decreasing the range or quality of plant-based options.

The relationship between Elon University and the town of Elon has been strained for many years, according to the town of Elon Police Chief Kelly Blackwelder; Blackwelder said this is due to a difference in priorities and a lack of communication. Thus, she said her main goals as police chief are to further the neighborhood coalition and attend more student-run events. These goals have helped to begin to improve the relationship between the town and the university, yet Blackwelder would still consider this to be a work in progress.

Jana Lynn Patterson, dean of students, gave members of Elon University’s Student Government Association an update on the student flu vaccination rate at a business meeting on Nov. 18. Patterson said that 539 students have not yet submitted their vaccines through their student portal. Any remaining students not in compliance by Nov. 22 — over break — will have their Phoenix Cards turned off.

The university will take actions to deactivate Phoenix cards if students do not comply with receiving flu vaccinations, according to Dean of Students Jana Lynn Patterson. SGA members heard from Patterson during a Student Government Association meeting on Thursday, in addition to hearing from Vice President for Strategic Initiatives Jeff Stein, who informed students there would be a clinic on campus after Thanksgiving for students to receive booster shots of the Pfizer-BioTech COVID-19 vaccine.

As alumni return for the Homecoming football game on Saturday, Nov. 6, the 1981 championship game is something on the minds of past and current players. Elon University beat Pittsburg State 3-0 in Burlington for the NAIA Championship game, occurring before Elon was a member of the NCAA. Yet it was a game that Elon was never supposed to win, according to Elon native Kemper Wyatt. Wyatt is in possession of unique memorabilia for Elon’s back to back championship winning games in 1980 and 1981.

The American Enterprise Institute’s Executive Council presented a panel discussion on Middle Eastern policy with professor Tom Kerr and AEI Senior fellow Dr. Michael Rubin. With the U.S. recently having withdrawn from Afghanistan, this and other middle eastern countries' continued conflict has been something on students' minds.

From over 800 schools, Elon University was named a ‘Green College’ by the Princeton Review, signifying an exceptional commitment to sustainability. This ranking notes colleges who have a focus on sustainability within “their academic offerings and career preparation for students, campus policies, initiatives and activities,” according to the Princeton Review.
