During the April 14 Student Government Association business meeting, Class of 2023 Senator Trevor Molin was elected unanimously by the senate to the role of Speaker of the Senate. The rest of the senate was sworn in and four of the vacant positions were filled.

The town of Elon Board of Aldermen unanimously passed a resolution to temporarily close the northern entrance of Aspen Avenue. The decision comes after two previous Board of Aldermen meetings hearing public concerns and consulting with the town’s attorney’s on the topic. The board decided to close the entrance due to construction from a new development within Ashely Woods causing an increase in traffic.

North Carolina’s primary day for the midterm elections is May 17 and will include all races that had multiple candidates for each party run. This year is a midterm election year, meaning there is no presidential race, but there are both federal and local races and primary elections will determine who from each party will make it to the midterm election in November. North Carolina’s primary’s are semi-closed, which is not the case in every state and means that if you are registered to vote for a specific party, that is the ballot you have to take in a primary election.

After an hour and 45 minute-long closed meeting where Elon’s Board of Aldermen talked to their attorney about legal issues regarding closing a portion of Aspen Avenue and declaring a moratorium on local road connections to adjacent communities, the public portion of the board’s meeting was canceled.

Campaigning for Elon University’s Student Government elections will begin today after the mandatory candidates meeting at 5:15 p.m., happening in Moseley 215. Voting will begin March 28 at 8 a.m. and conclude March 29 at 5 p.m.

Elon University President Connie Book said the majority of the 9% tuition increase for the 2022-23 academic year will go toward financial aid. While much of the money allotted will go to incoming freshmen, there are funds set aside for current students, according to Book.

After filing his candidacy in the last hour before the deadline last Friday, Kelly White publicly announced his campaign for Sheriff in Alamance County. He is running against incumbent Terry Johnson, who has been in the position since 2002 and hasn’t faced a challenger in his past two elections.

Senior Emily Katz, event coordinator at Hillel, described her supervisor Hillary Zaken as a “ray of sunshine and color.” She, and the close to 50 other senior student employees present at the supervisor appreciation dinner, talked about how much of an impact her supervisor had on both her Elon experience and life in general. Students had the opportunity to invite their supervisors, who for many of them were someone they’ve worked closely with during their time at Elon.

Hilary Corna ʼ07 will deliver the Elon University 2022 commencement address. Corna previously gained recognition in 2013 as a part of Elon’s Top 10 Under 10 Alumni Award for landing a senior executive officer position with Toyota and success with her first book, “One White Face."
