Local businesses prepare for departure of students for Thanksgiving break

In just a few weeks, North Williamson Avenue will experience a downturn in traffic as students are leaving campus for a winter break longer than usual. Stores such as All That Jas and The Oak House are preparing for this shift in business.

Initiative builds bridge between religion, sexual identity

Just last year the Gender and LGBTQIA Center and Truitt Center created the Spirit and Pride Initiative, a program that strives to create a bridge between gender and sexual identity and religion. In its first year on campus, this initiative has already started to get positive feedback.

There are only nine Hispanic professors at Elon University, according to the 2019- 2020 university fact book. Despite having few colleagues with a similar background, professor of Spanish Federico Pous said that in his six years at the school, he has found his home within the university’s Spanish department.

Pandemic messes with in-person connections

A key component of every introduction to sociology class is the “looking glass self,” a concept created by American sociologist Charles Horton Cooley. The looking glass self describes how people develop their characters from interactions with others. But due to COVID-19 physical distancing regulations, interactions with others have changed, leaving some to wonder what the long-term impact on mental health and interpersonal relations will be.

New Student Orientation prepares for modified experience

Senior Cameron McCrary has been involved in New Student Orientation for the past three years. She started as orientation leader and is now a student coordinator. McCrary has the responsibility of building training for the orientation team and facilitating breakout sessions. Through this position, she has also helped to make orientation better fit Elon’s coronavirus policies.

Magazine launches in effort to represent black students

Connie Book Visits Elon Elementary with a $10,000 Check

President Connie Book presented a $10,000 donation check to the Alamance-Burlington School System Friday. She also presented cookies to the second graders at Elon Elementary after reading them a story. The $10,000 was raised from the book drive during President Book’s Inauguration week in October. For every $20 dollars that were donated to the University, a book was donated to the elementary school.
