If someone had told college-aged John Pardini that he’d be coaching Division I soccer in North Carolina at this point in his life, he would have laughed. But after three years as an assistant coach for the Elon University women’s soccer team, his interesting path to from Smithtown, New York, to Elon has given him a chance for a future as a collegiate head coach.

It’s a pretty common occurrence in a soccer match. Someone might get fouled, or the ball might get kicked out of bounds, resulting in a corner kick. Players begin milling about, trying to get in the right position so that when the ball is kicked, they can do their best to put the ball in the back of the net.

Nevertheless, two minutes into Sunday's match against Hofstra University, the Phoenix gave up an own goal to fall behind. A second-half goal by the Pride capped the scoring in a 2-0 victory over the Phoenix at Rudd Field.

When it came to the formation that the Elon University women’s soccer team uses on the field, head coach Chris Neal knew something had to change. There were many reasons for the team’s tough 2014 season. Injuries piled up during the Phoenix’s first season in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA), and there were many matches during which the team was undermanned and outplayed.

Through 84 minutes, all signs pointed to an easy victory for the Elon University women's soccer team, but a furious comeback by the University of North Carolina at Charlotte nearly drew the game. But after two quick 49er goals, senior midfielder Samantha Burch notched her second goal, this one from the penalty spot, to cap off a 4-2 win on Hispanic Heritage Night at Rudd Field.

During the Elon University women's soccer team's Sept. 4 victory over the University of North Florida, the Phoenix took more than 25 shots, only one of which resulted in a goal. While the shot count was the same against South Carolina State University, the Phoenix were much more successful with their shots, putting five in the back of the net in a shutout victory Sept. 6 in Orangeburg, South Carolina.
