On any given day, Student Government Association Executive President Darien Flowers will receive a phone call from the Office of the President requesting a meeting and one from a freshman complaining about a strange smell in Smith residence hall. He’ll respond to the countless emails he receives on a daily basis, he’ll attend meeting after meeting and he’ll spend a few hours in his office in Moseley catching up on SGA-related work. All of this as a full-time student set to graduate in the spring.

Christopher Glockson II, a member of the Alpha class of the Elon Academy, died July 20 following an accident at his home in Brooklyn, N.Y., according to an email from Smith Jackson, vice president and dean of student life.

Senate leaders announced yesterday they reached a deal to freeze student loan rates for one year, according to a report from the Washington Post. The deal must be finalized in Congress by July 1 to prevent rates on government-subsizied Stafford loans from doubling from 3.4 to 6.8 percent.

A year is characterized by many moments. Some coarse with a pain that we hope is fleeting. Others overflowing with joy so strong we want to relive it again and again. The past year at Elon has been marked by many such moments in the grand circle of life. We’ve lost members of our community and mourned their passing. We’ve celebrated the breaking of ground to make room for growth and development. We’ve joined together as a community to stand against discrimination and hatred of numerous forms.

The ‘other’ throughout American history is generally easy to spot. Look for a catastrophic event or significant movement that propels them into the national spotlight. Look for media coverage that is biased, deceiving, even inciting violence. Look for Americans reacting to the press with a call to arms.
