A wall of sweet smelling baked goods greets customers as they walk into Cakes, etc. by Cindy. To enter the bakery, just look for the neon open sign on the ground floor of the Acorn Inn. People can find the owner Cindy Pettiford behind the counter along with her husband, Cory Pettiford and her three sons.

Though environmentally friendly initiatives have been around for years, we are only now seeing how it is impacting the environment, both positively and negatively. Pew Research Center reported in a 2023 study that around 61% of Americans polled believe that climate change is impacting their local community, although only 37% say that it should be the top issue being addressed by the government. As noted by Matthew Flacksenburg, a sustainability intern at Elon University, there has been an uptick in ethical consumerism, which has played a key role in how products are being marketed and produced.

In a county marked by its rural character and economic differences, Alamance County has had a slow start to bring together its art community after pandemic restrictions were lifted in June 2021. Artists and event organizers alike have been eager to revive the art scene in Alamance, but have faced challenges in their quest to do so.

Only seven minutes from campus, Village Grill was voted “Best Date Night Spot.” The restaurant is run by general manager Carter Honeycutt, who has been in the role for over a year now. Honeycutt said the establishment is busy mostly during the weekends, with the normal demographic being mainly older adults.

Scrolling through the newly reintroduced app, Yik Yak, one can see a multitude of relatable posts, or “yaks,” as they’re known to users. Posts range from comments on the dining halls, to how they are spending the weekend, to calling out loud neighbors. But some content posted involves harsh comments on people’s appearance, what organization they are affiliated with, and spreading rumors that can damage a person’s reputation on campus.

After an article in the News & Record about the non-profit organization Little Free Library caught her attention, Town of Elon Downtown Development Administrator Kathleen Patterson thought Elon’s community could use one itself. There are currently two Little Free Libraries located in Elon’s parks, one on campus outside Mooney Building and the other placed next to Pandora’s Pies.

The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services announced that student-teachers will be eligible to receive the COVID-19 vaccine, alongside teachers and other school employees. According to the latest NCDHHS vaccination plan, frontline essential workers such as educators are included in the third group. The decision will have ramifications for Elon University seniors who are working as full-time student-teachers.

Freshmen have survived their first semester at Elon University with the fall now coming to a close. Of course, this semester was not a traditional one and had obstacles that no other freshman class has experienced. This includes the COVID-19 pandemic, a tense political situation and a non-traditional semester.

After ten years working for Elon University, Chaplain Jan Fuller has announced her retirement. The university chaplain and lecturer in humanities has made it a mission of hers to help students connect with their spiritual selves through promoting cultural and spiritual interaction.

This year’s Homecoming is set to be on Zoom. The time usually spent at a football game or College Coffee will now be replaced by Zoom events. Instead of the traditional weekend, Elon has made it a week-long with over 100 opportunities for alumni to get involved in the Elon community.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, colleges and universities are struggling to find ways for students to get involved on campus while being socially distant. A group of students came up with an idea that would solve those problems: a virtual scavenger hunt. The idea for the interactive scavenger hunt came from a University of Chicago tradition, but according to the supervisor of the Elon Traditions council, professor Jodean Schmiederer, the Elon Traditions Council of Judges customized this to be interactive with the Elon student community.
