It’s that time of year again, when the donkeys and elephants are done hibernating and have joined together once again to co-host America’s favorite traveling circus – the presidential election. [quote]Millions of Americans did not sacrifice their lives for the sake of public complacency.
Despite the administration and students uniting against instances of prejudice during the fall, most notably the creation of the Not on our Campus movement, a homophobic slur was yelled at an Elon University student Wednesday night. What remains to be seen is how Elon handles the Catch-22 presented to them.
False alarms from Elon University continue to place a bind on the town of Elon's fire response resources. Any time Elon students pull a fire alarm or set off the smoke detectors by burning their dinners, the Town of Elon pulls out the cash register. According to Eddie King, fire chief for the town of Elon, the combined cost of personnel and vehicles is $575 per false alarm. "There's no such thing as a free response to anything," King said. "We're using fuel, wear and tear on the vehicles and man-hours." One recent incident at the Crest Apartments showed how the line between harmless cooking accidents and dangerous fires is blurred. According to the fire department, students cooking doughnuts led to a vat of grease causing a fire. The fire was extinguished by the apartment's sprinkler system and the apartment had more water damage than fire damage.
Debate fueled by the presidential race continues to rage concerning President Barack Obama's recent executive order, which intends to relieve some of the financial burden college students face with loans after graduation. The executive order decreases the minimum payment on student loans from 15 to 10 percent.
Female students may have to find another option besides the Elon University Health Center to receive insurance- covered birth control next year. Beginning August 2012, birth control pills will be free to all Americans with health insurance.
