Candidates announce plans for local election

The race for the Republican presidential candidacy has captured the nation’s attention, but residents of Alamance County are preparing for a more local election. Mark Hopp and Jeremy Teetor recently announced their plans in the Burlington Times-News to run for Alamance County Board of Commissioners.

New tobacco policy faces non-compliance

A change in Elon University's tobacco policy prohibits smoking within 30 feet of the perimeter of any building since fall. The change has be not been accompanied by accommodations for smokers, a possible factor of the ineffectiveness of the policy, according to Jordan Perry, coordinator for student development on substance education. "Part of the problem is that receptacles can be difficult to find, and to my knowledge, no shelter is available for smoking away from campus buildings in the event of inclement weather," said L.D.

Leaping lizards: Science grant for Elon Academy

Researchers from Elon University, the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and the University of North Carolina at Pembroke were given $2.7 million from the National Science Foundation to fund a statewide project called Herpetology Education in Rural Places and Spaces (HERPS). Elon is using the grant to fund a class in herpetology, or the study of amphibians and reptiles, taught at Elon Academy. Deborah Long, director of the academy, said the money from the grant is going toward a variety of field trips, materials, salary for instructors and other costs needed for the class. "The target population for the grant is the rural, typically marginalized people in the area of science," said Terry Tomasek, who teaches herpetology at the Academy. The grant targets demographics such as citizens with lower socioeconomic standing and ethnic minorities. "These are the people that we don't typically find in science type activities," Tomasek said.

With the recent passing of the Affordable Care Act, some university health centers are being forced to adjust their fees because of changes under the preventative care portion of the act, which lists several preventative medications and measures that are covered under universal health care.

Pulitzer Prize winner explores complex nature of immigration

Sonia Nazario went on a 16,000 mile journey to tell a story. Nazario spoke at Elon University Thursday night about what she saw during that journey, which led to her writing "Enrique's Journey," originally published as a journalistic series before expansion into a book. She was inspired to write her story by her housekeeper, Carmen, who left four children behind in her native country of Guatemala.
