Women's soccer strikes early to beat Davidson 2-0

In its final match before Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) play begins, the Elon University women’s soccer team got a first-half goal from each of its young, speedy forwards to beat Davidson College 2-0 Thursday night at Rudd Field. Freshman forward Taylor Paradoski scored in the 17th minute for her first career collegiate goal and sophomore forward Tori Baliatico found the back of the net in the 28th minute, something that encourages head coach Chris Neal ahead of conference play. "I think we took a big step forward today,” Neal said.

Women's soccer hopes depth, athleticism help turn corner in CAA

As the Elon University women’s soccer team enters its third season in the Colonial Athletic Association, head coach Chris Neal has seen what it takes to win in this conference. Neal spent seven seasons as an assistant coach at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, working under head coach Paul Cairney as the Seahawks improved its CAA record from 0-4-1 in 2001 to 8-3 in 2006.

Women’s soccer finds positives despite rough run in CAA

As far as women’s soccer goes, the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) is one of the best conferences in the NCAA. At the conclusion of the regular season, six of the 10 conference teams were ranked in the top 70 of the NCAA’s Rating Percentage Index (RPI). The Elon University women’s soccer team was not one of those six teams, finishing 10th in the conference. And yet, head coach Chris Neal sees a lot of good that came out of the season.

Women's soccer loses to James Madison in overtime

The Elon University women’s soccer team was seconds away from the second overtime period against James Madison University, but the Dukes scored with six seconds remaining in the first overtime period to defeat the Phoenix 1-0 Friday night in Harrisonburg, V.A.  Sophomore midfielder Allison Bordell’s header found the back of the next moments before the conclusion of the first overtime period, giving the Dukes a win it sorely needed heading into the Colonial Athletic Association tournament next weekend.

Women's soccer loses to Drexel on overtime goal

The Elon University women's soccer team struck first against the Drexel University Dragons, but a goals in regulation and then overtime spelled defeat for the Phoenix as Elon fell 2-1 in Philadelphia Sunday afternoon.  Drexel freshman forward Vanessa Kara scored the game-winning goal for the Dragons in the 104th minute, her second of the match and as well as the second of two unanswered goals by Drexel.

Pair of first half goals spells defeat for Elon

The Elon University women’s soccer team gave up two goals in the span of 90 seconds in the first half of and couldn’t come back, losing 3-0 to the University of Delaware Friday night in Delaware.  Junior forward Natalie Zelenky scored the first of her two goals in the 15th minute, scoring from eight yards out to give the Blue Hens an early lead.

Nicole Dennion returns for Elon women's soccer Senior Day

Emotions always run high on a Senior Day, but they were cranked up an extra notch at the Oct. 11 Elon University women’s soccer team's match. Senior forward Nicole Dennion, former Southern Conference Player of the Year who missed last year while battling cancer, made her first appearance in two years by taking the opening kickoff in the lineup for the Phoenix. After kicking off the match, she ran to the sideline for a substitute to applause from both teams and fans. “An indescribable level [of emotion],” said head coach Chris Neal. “It was really good having her here.”

Women's soccer scores early, often in win over Francis Marion

The Elon University women's soccer team scored early and often Tuesday night, defeating Francis Marion University 6-0 in Florence, S.C., in a late non-conference matchup. Senior defender Mel Insley got the Phoenix on the board in the 14th minute, scoring her third goal of the season, on all free kicks.

Building success from the back

The past two seasons have told different stories for the Elon University women’s soccer team. The 2013 version scored twice as many goals as they gave up, scoring 56 goals and allowing 28 in the 22 matches the team played.

Hurricane Joaquin forces postponement of soccer matches

The impending rain coming from Hurricane Joaquin has forced postponements of matches for both the Elon University men's and women's soccer teams this weekend. The next match for the women's team is 7 p.m. Monday at Francis Marion University. The men will not be in action again until 7 p.m. Oct. 10, against Lipscomb University.

Phoenix withstands late flurry to beat Charlotte

Through 84 minutes, all signs pointed to an easy victory for the Elon Women's soccer team, who were beating the University of North Carolina  at Charlotte 3-0. Six minutes and a few goals later, Elon left victorious, defeating the 49ers 4-2 Friday night at Rudd Field. The Phoenix had successfully stifled the Charlotte attack for most of the match, scoring a goal in the first half and tacking on two more before the onslaught of goals to end the match.
