'Like a movie': Elon reflects on roller coaster season

ASHEVILLE, N.C. — Five months ago, questions surrounded the Elon University women’s basketball team. The Phoenix had to replace 1,000-point scorer Kelsey Evans and 2,000-point scorer Ali Ford. Kelsey Harris was the team’s lone senior and was being thrown into a leadership role. High expectations surrounded all four freshmen.

Elon eliminated in SoCon semis by UTC

A day after using a strong game down low to push past Appalachian State, the Elon University Women's Basketball couldn't repeat the performance, struggling in the paint on its way to a 77-44 semi-final loss against the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga. With the victory, UTC moves on to play the winner of Davidson and Western Carolina The defeat ends the season for the Phoenix, in addition to an era, as Elon moves to the Colonial Athletic Association after a decade of Southern Conference play. It was a day where nothing went right for Elon, and nothing went wrong for UTC.

Cold stretch eliminates Elon from SoCon Tournament

ASHEVILLE, N.C. — With just under three minutes to play, University of Tennessee at Chattanooga guard Whitney Hartlage threw a pass downcourt in transition that was tipped by an Elon University defender. But, after the deflection, it ended up in the hands of Chattanooga’s Meghan Downes, who easily laid it in for two points. That moment was just a microcosm of a frustrating day for Elon University, as the fifth-seeded -Phoenix fell to No.

Elon Women defeat App St., advance to SoCon semi-finals

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZdpQYZ9SJ6c ASHEVILLE, N.C. -- A technical foul late in the second half by Elon's Jessica Farmer allowed Appalachian State to climb back in the game, but the Phoenix held off the Mountaineers for a 59-56 victory in the quarterfinals of the Southern Conference tournament. This was the third meeting between the two schools this season; they split the regular season series as both held their home court. With the win, Elon (15-15) advances to the semi-finals where they will face #1 seed Chattanooga (27-3) on Sunday at 12 p.m.

Inconsistent Phoenix preparing for SoCon Tournament

After a grueling 28-game regular season that had its ups and downs, the most important games of the Elon University women’s basketball team’s season have yet to be played. The Phoenix will play Appalachian State University at 2:15 p.m.

Elon's Rhodes named SoCon Freshman of the Year

Elon University freshman Jenifer Rhodes was named Southern Conference Freshman of the Year as voted on by the coaches, the league announced March 5. Rhodes averaged 9.7 points per game and 5.5 rebounds per game while being named CRONS Freshman of the Week three times throughout the course of the year.

Elon gets by Samford in low-scoring affair

The Elon University women’s basketball team survived a late surge from Samford University to win, 44-43, in its final game of the regular season March 2 at the Pete Hanna Center in Birmingham, Ala. The Phoenix led 24-14 at the half, holding Samford to just 19.2 percent shooting in the first half.  Elon shot 40.7 percent from the field in the first half, led by junior Sam Coffer’s five points. Samford went on a 13-2 run to start the second half, but Elon’s bench scoring was key down the stretch as the Phoenix was able to hold on.  Elon led 44-43 with 1:56 to play when its defense came up big. After a Phoenix turnover with 27 seconds left gave the ball back to the Bulldogs, Samford’s Hannah Nichols went to the line, where she missed a free throw that would have tied the game.  But the Bulldogs were able to come down with the offensive rebound and had a chance to win the game.  As time expired, Samford’s Kate Fletcher shot a 3-pointer that was blocked by Coffer, sealing the win for the Phoenix. Elon shot 34 percent on the afternoon, with Coffer scoring eight points, the most of any Elon starter.  The Phoenix scored 23 points off of the bench, as sophomore Jessica Farmer scored eight points and junior Shannen Cochraham netted seven. The game marked the first time this season that an Elon player failed to reach double-digits in scoring.  In addition, the performance was Elon’s second lowest-scoring game of the season, only scoring fewer points Dec.

Elon falls short at Wofford

The Elon University women’s basketball team scratched and clawed its way back from a nine-point deficit with under 13 minutes to play, but ultimately fell three points short, as the Wofford College Terriers eked out a 68-65 win Monday afternoon, Jan.
