Strong second half propels Elon over Towson

A strong second half propelled the Elon University Women's Basketball team to a 58-43 win over the visiting Towson Tigers on Sunday afternoon. With the victory, Elon is now 4-2 in Colonial Athletic Association play, and 11-6 overall.

Turnovers, offensive struggles haunt Phoenix in 68-51 loss to James Madison

It was a night filled with offensive inconsistency and a struggle for points for the Elon University women’s basketball team in its Thursday night match-up against the James Madison University Dukes. The Phoenix, coming off a four-day break, could not seem to find a way to contest the offensive output put forth by the Dukes in a 68-51 loss. “The outcome of this game could have been a lot different if we cut down on turnovers.” Head coach Charlotte Smith said.

Elon closes out 2014 with a 62-46 win over Lenoir-Rhyne

Coming off a strong win on Monday, the Elon women’s basketball team extended its win streak to two games after defeating Lenoir-Rhyne University 62-46 on New Year’s Eve. The winning effort was led by freshman center Malaya Johnson, built off her excellent performance in her last game.

Johnson scores 22 as Elon women defeat Campbell

Freshman center Malaya Johnson scored 22 points as the Elon University women’s basketball team rolled past the Campbell University Camels, 77-51. Johnson was hot from all over the court, shooting 83 percent from the field and 66 percent from the free throw line.

Elon women come up empty-handed against Vanderbilt

The Elon women’s basketball team fell short against Vanderbilt University on Sunday, Dec. 14, at Alumni Gym 66-50. Elon never seemed to get solid footing against their Southeastern Conference opponent, even falling behind 31 points midway through the second half. Senior guard Zora Stephenson had a productive day for the Phoenix, leading the team in total points with 14 to pair with three steals, after an impressive first half showing.

Elon starts 4-0 for the first time in 17 years

While dorms may have emptied Tuesday as students traveled home for Thanksgiving break, Alumni Gym filled with excitement as the Elon University women’s basketball team fended off the Liberty University Flames by a 73-62 score and captured its first 4-0 start in 17 years. Senior guard Zora Stephenson made a layup five seconds into the game.

New talent adds depth to Elon women's basketball

From the opponent’s standpoint, planning to play the Elon University women’s basketball team has become easier over the last few years. It was expected that Elon’s offense would feature a steady diet of Ali Ford, Kelsey Harris or Zora Stephenson, and not much else. Enter true freshmen Shay Burnett and Malaya Johnson and sophomore transfer Essence Baucom, and gone are the days of an Elon team with limited options. “One of the things as coaches we’re most excited about is the depth,” said Charlotte Smith, who’s entering her fourth year as head coach of the Phoenix.

Elon looks to build tempo with experienced roster

The Elon University women’s basketball roster enters the 2014-2015 season largely intact from last year. The team includes the Southern Conference Freshman of the Year and sophomore forward Jennifer Rhodes, as well as a member of the Southern Conference All-Freshman team, sophomore guard Lauren Brown. This may spell trouble for the rest of the Colonial Athletic Association, as the Phoenix enters its first year of play in the new conference.
