Women's basketball cruises to exhibition win

The Elon University women’s basketball team started its season off on the right foot, winning its lone exhibition game 74-72 over Division II Wingate University Saturday afternoon. Elon was able to storm out of the gates at the beginning of each half, holding a 23-7 advantage in both the first and third quarters.

5 student-athletes reprimanded after shooting paintballs at President Lambert's house

Five Elon University freshmen student-athletes were reprimanded by their respective athletic teams for shooting paintballs at the house of President Leo Lambert late last week, according to multiple sources with knowledge of the situation. Three of the athletes were football players — wide receiver Jeremiah Bridges, defensive back Khalil Moore and defensive lineman Marcus Willoughby — and two were women’s basketball players — guards Jada Graves and Madison Wilder.

LGBTQIA athletes find match at Elon

The first time senior Jess Farmer and Aly Quintana ’15 met was a typical weekend evening for college students. In March 2013 — Quintana’s sophomore year, Farmer’s freshman year — some members of the Elon University women’s basketball team and softball team got together before heading out to parties for the evening. After spending time watching each other on the court and field, the two were finally able to connect, exchanging phone numbers before the night ended. The friendship then quickly developed into something more — but not without its fair share of thought.

As all 10 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) women’s basketball teams make their way to Upper Marlboro, Maryland, the second year in the conference for Elon University feels all too familiar to the first. Just like the men’s basketball team, Elon is in the exact same position as last season, playing as the fourth seed and needing to go through conference powerhouse James Madison University in the semifinals to get to the championship.

Elon University women's basketball sophomore guard Shay Burnett was named to the Colonial Athletic Association's (CAA) All-CAA First Team Tuesday night, the conference announced on its livestream award show. Burnett led the Phoenix in scoring and rebounding, finishing with 13 points per game and 7.9 rebounds per game.

Two women's basketball seniors to participate in coaching clinic

Two Elon University women's basketball seniors are a part of the 75-person group that will attend the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) "So You Want To be A Coach" program. Senior guards Jospeha Mbouma and Nicole Razor will travel to Indianapolis to participate in a three-day workshop April 1-3. “‘So You Want To Be A Coach’ is a premier program for student athletes who want to transition into the field of coaching,” said Elon head coach Charlotte Smith.

Junior women's basketball player shoots way out of struggles

After missing 37 shots in a row, junior guard Maddie McCallie could have allowed her struggles to control her thought process when she had a shot. But her teammates on the Elon University women’s basketball team wouldn’t let that happen. “She’s a shooter,” said junior guard Essence Baucom. “We always tell her we have confidence in her and to keep shooting. That’s what she did.”

Last-second layup gives women's basketball win at Northeastern

Freshman guard/forward Nikki McDonald made a layup with three seconds left to give the Elon University women's basketball team its third straight Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) win, 56-54 over Northeastern University Friday afternoon. McDonald's layup was assisted by sophomore guard Shay Burnett, who picked up her fifth double-double of the season with 17 points and a career-high 15 rebounds.
