Daunting task ahead for Elon in CAA final

HARRISONBURG, Va. — After earning its spot in the Colonial Athletic Association championship game, the Elon University women’s basketball team watched the first half of the other semifinal high up in the rafters at the JMU Convocation Center. The Phoenix left at halftime, going back to its hotel to prepare for tonight’s 7 p.m.

Seeking more: Women's basketball readies for CAA Tournament

The tears had started to come down senior forward Jenifer Rhodes’ face. In what could be her final game in Alumni Gym, Rhodes had tied her career-high with 21 points, leading Elon to a 82-48 win over the University of North Carolina at Wilmington March 1 and, with it, the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) regular season title. That title, and all the work that was put in to get it, had Rhodes on the cusp of crying.

Women's basketball routs UNCW to win CAA title

The Elon University women’s basketball team clinched its first conference championship in its Division I era by routing the University of North Carolina at Wilmington (UNCW) 82-48 Wednesday night in Alumni Gym. With the win, Elon earned the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) regular season title, finishing conference play with a 16-2 record. It's the first conference crown in the 18 years Elon's been in Division I and the first of any kind in 35 years, leading Elon to cut down a net after the game. The championship feeling still hadn't sunk in for head coach Charlotte Smith after going up the ladder last and wearing the net around her neck.

Triple threat: Elon's 3 1,000-point scorers

With a turnaround layup in the second quarter Sunday, Feb. 12, Elon University women's basketball senior forward Jenifer Rhodes became the 23rd player in program history to score 1,000 points in her career. And, with that, she joined senior guard Lauren Brown and junior guard Shay Burnett as Elon players who reached quadruple digits this season, the first time in school history that three players did so in the same season.

Women's basketball falters in 4th in loss at JMU

HARRISONBURG, Va. — Just when it seemed like the Elon University women’s basketball team would finally avenge its demons and defeat conference kingpin James Madison University for the first time in school history, it all fell apart, as Elon crumbled down the stretch and lost to the Dukes 61-54 Sunday afternoon in Harrisonburg, Virginia. Elon took a 44-41 lead into the fourth quarter and made the first basket of the frame to push its lead up to five, but James Madison’s stagnant offense finally clicked again, rolling through the Phoenix on a 16-2 run to jump from down by five to up by nine. Elon’s offense turned anemic as the Dukes heated up, turning the ball over six times in the fourth while only making three shots.

Women's basketball scorching through start of CAA play

It would be forgivable if junior guard Shay Burnett and the Elon University women’s basketball team showed off a little bit of their confidence right about now. The Phoenix has won nine straight games — a program record for the Division I era and the longest winning streak since 1981-1982 — and currently sits alone atop the Colonial Athletic Association standings, holding a perfect 5-0 conference record and a 13-4 record overall. But Burnett is following the direction of her head coach, Charlotte Smith, and trying to keep the displays of confidence to a minimum on the court.

Weather delays lead to crazy travel day for Elon women's basketball

While most Elon University students were outside enjoying the eight inches of snow Saturday afternoon, the women's basketball team was stuck on a plane. What should've been a simple, hour-long flight from Philadelphia to Raleigh-Durham International Airport turned into a 12-hour process from the time the team left its hotel to when it arrived back on campus, making the day between Colonial Athletic Association games just a tad more stressful than usual.

The gravity of Monday night's victory wasn't lost on junior guard Shay Burnett. The Elon University women's basketball team recorded one of the biggest victories of its Division I era, toppling visiting Rutgers University 66-54 at Alumni Gym. Burnett had 20 points, and senior guard Lauren Brown added 13. "We definitely made history beating Rutgers," Burnett said.

How Elon hosted a USA-USSR women's basketball game during the middle of the Cold War

For Dr. Janie P. Brown, the trips back and forth to the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame (NCSHoF) meetings from her log cabin home in Northern Alamance County can take a good amount of time. But the retired Elon University professor of physical education doesn’t mind the drive, especially when she can be a part of the induction process as a Board of Director. This past summer, the NCSHoF inducted Susan Yow, leading Brown to reminisce on the memories of Yow’s playing days under her sister, Kay, when at the then-Elon College. And while some memories have faded over the years, there’s one event Brown couldn’t possibly forget. The June 3, 1974 women’s basketball game at Elon’s Alumni Memorial Gym between the U.S.

Women's basketball hoping that 12 is the right number

Elon University women’s basketball head coach Charlotte Smith knows that she is working with one of the smallest rosters in the country. And she doesn’t seem to care, really only bringing one concern into the season about it. “I love the number that we have,” Smith said.
