Women's basketball advances in home tournament

Elon women’s basketball downed the tenth-seeded Hofstra Pride 71-51 in the opening round of the 2020 Colonial Athletic Association Women’s Basketball Championship. This is the first time the Schar Center has played host to a basketball conference tournament.

The first time Charlotte Smith saw an African American female in a position of power was during her days at UNC Chapel Hill, where she attended a Nike All-American camp. Now, Smith is working to be what she saw all those years ago — a role model for young women.

As Venessa Corbett stepped onto the hardwood in Elon’s Schar Center shortly after her 60th birthday, she was greeted by the same raucous cheering, the unmistakable smell of popcorn and the bright shining lights that illuminated her Elon hall of fame basketball career in Alumni Gym.

Phoenix fall short against Huskies

The Elon University Phoenix (12-12) fell to the Northeastern University Huskies (11-13) on Sunday afternoon’s game, 69-45. This game was the annual Play-4-Kay game, an event stemming from the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. The foundation honors former Elon women's basketball head coach Kay Yow, who passed away from breast cancer in 2009. The foundation raises money for not only breast cancer patients but all forms of cancer.

Venessa Corbett's jersey retired

History was made in the Schar Center on Sunday afternoon as the first ever Elon female jersey was retired. Venessa Corbett’s No. 55 jersey was lifted into the wings of the Phoenix’s home arena. Corbett is the Elon all-time leader in points with 2,430. Corbett also holds records in field goals per game, and rebounds per game.

A changing of the guard

Despite only being sophomores, Brie Perpignan and Kayla Liles have the composure of veteran seniors on the basketball court. This year, the team is composed of nine underclassmen and four juniors and one redshirt junior, a similar group to last year’s young cohort.

The ball is in women's basketball's court

A new basketball season is upon us, and the Elon University Phoenix women’s team look to hit the ground running. The quest for a winning season and third NCAA tournament berth in four years has gotten off to a stunning start for North Carolina coaching legend Charlotte Smith. This 2019-2020 season started with a match-up against Western Carolina University and a thrilling overtime victory against Appalachian State University.
