Hamilton still a week or so away, Blake more

Elon University sophomore guards Austin Hamilton and Kevin Blake are recovering from injuries as the beginning of practice commences for the men's basketball team. Hamilton, a media and coaches' selection for the Southern Conference All-Freshman Team last season, is still a week to ten days away from returning to full health, while Blake is expected to be out two-and-a-half to three weeks, head coach Matt Matheny said Sunday. Hamilton missed six games late last season due to the injury as well as battling mononucleosis. "We’re very, very hopeful that Austin’s only a week to ten days away," Matheny said.

Schedule, strength important for elevation of men’s basketball program

Last season, the Elon University men’s basketball team had shirts made that read “Elevate Elon.” The idea was to remind the players that the Elon program needs to be on the rise in college basketball circles. A tough schedule loomed, including games against the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and San Diego State University, and the Phoenix ended the season with a 15-16 record, one shy of a .500 record. This year, the schedule is near the same level of difficulty. They’re going to play Duke University.

Men's basketball to host part of EA Sports Maui Invitational

The Elon University men's basketball team will open their season against a two-time national runner-up and host four games in a prestigious season-opening tournament. The university announced today that the Phoenix will take on Butler University, who lost the NCAA Championship Game in 2010 to Duke University and 2011 to the University of Connecticut, Nov.

Two Elon men’s basketball recruits honored The future of Elon University men’s basketball team got a little brighter this past week, as two recruits for head coach Matt Matheny’s squad were named to county all-star teams. Tanner Samson, of Regis Jesuit High School in Aurora, Co., was named to the All-Continental League first team for his play during his senior season.

A fresh changing of the guard

From the beginning, he seemed to be overwhelmed by it all. I interviewed Elon freshman guard Austin Hamilton before the 2011-2012 men's basketball season about the schedule for the year. His quotes were somewhat short, but his enthusiasm was high. "One of the reasons I came here was in the past seasons, they played a really tough schedule, ACC teams and such," he said.

Awards chosen by The Pendulum Sports Desk MVP | Jack Isenbarger | #20 | Sophomore guard Even with a bum shoulder for most of the season, sophomore guard Jack Isenbarger managed to impress everyone around him. He was named to the Southern Conference All-Conference team by the coaches, second team All-Conference by the media and the All-Conference tournament second team. “I thought he earned All-Southern Conference honors,” Elon head coach Matt Matheny said.

Phoenix falls to Wildcats in SoCon semifinals

Davidson College used a 25-6 run in the second half to defeat the Elon Phoenix 83-67 in the semifinals of the 2012 Men's Basketball Southern Conference Tournament in Asheville, N.C. The Wildcats held Elon without a field goal for 11:02 while pulling away.

So they did it. The Elon University men's basketball team defeated Georgia Southern University in the quarterfinals of the 2012 Southern Conference Tournament. I wrote here just over 24 hours ago that I thought it was possible, that anything could happen in the Southern Conference Tournament.

Phoenix defeats Georgia Southern, advance to semifinals of SoCon Tournament

Elon University sophomore guard Jack Isenbarger had eighteen points, including a perfect 9-9 on free throws, and the Phoenix defeated Georgia Southern University 65-58 Saturday night in the quarterfinals of the 2012 Southern Conference Tournament in Asheville, N.C. With the victory, the Phoenix advances to face Davidson College Sunday at 8:30 p.m.

Elon men to face Georgia Southern in SoCon Tournament quarterfinals

With their victory over the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, the Georgia Southern University Eagles will face the Elon Phoenix in the quarterfinals of the 2012 Men's Basketball Southern Conference Tournament. The Phoenix has faced the Eagles once this season, dropping a 69-63 decision to Georgia Southern Jan.

Southern Conference media also honors Hamilton, Isenbarger

Sophomore guard Jack Isenbarger and freshman guard Austin Hamilton were both honored by the Men's Southern Conference Sports Media Assocation today. Isenbarger was named to the All-Conference Second Team and Hamilton was selected to the All-Freshman Team. This announcement comes one day after both players were recognized by the SoCon coaches. Isenbarger was named to the All-Conference Team and Hamilton was chosen to the All-Freshman Team by league coaches. Davidson College junior forward Jake Cohen, Jr., was named the Malcolm U.

SoCon Tournament Preview: First-round bye crucial to men's tourney hopes

It’s not often that a first-round bye in a tournament of any kind is classified as negative. Elon University men’s basketball head coach Matt Matheny is happy with the bye, but concerned that his team might end up being a little behind their second round opponents in the Southern Conference Basketball Tournament March 2-5 in Asheville. “The bye is an interesting thing,” Matheny said.

Isenbarger, Hamilton honored by Southern Conference coaches

The Southern Conference announced their 2012 men's basketball postseason awards today, and the Elon Phoenix were well-represented. Sophomore guard Jack Isenbarger was named to the All-Conference Team and freshman guard Austin Hamilton was selected to the All-Freshman Team by the league's coaches. Isenbarger was first on the Phoenix and ninth in the SoCon with 14.1 points per game.
