Column: Hamilton's experience shines for Elon

As Christian Hairston rattled off a touching sentiment, Austin Hamilton was to his left with a smirk on his face. “That was cute,” said Hamilton, the center of attention after his career-high 31 points lifted the Elon University men’s basketball team over the University of Delaware 94-82. It was a different aura for the senior guard who’s been saddled with injuries and hidden in the shadow of last year’s senior class that’s widely considered one of the best in Elon history. So, like he said, he would have to lie to say he wasn’t basking in the moment. “It absolutely felt good,” Hamilton said.

Column: CAA hoops process taking time, but that's just fine

With a cyclonic ending still on his mind, Elon University men’s basketball coach Matt Matheny chose to start his press conference by talking about the Colonial Athletic Association. Elon had just been handed its third straight loss in the CAA, a 75-72 defeat to James Madison University in which senior guard Austin Hamilton’s 3-pointer missed right before the final buzzer. Instead of talking about that play, Matheny focused on the conference, in which it’s clear Elon is still adjusting.

Lost in the zone: James Madison keeps Elon rally in check

HARRISONBURG, Va. — Even the one play where James Madison University didn’t play zone defense, the Elon University men’s basketball team still couldn’t execute. Down 10 with less than five minutes to go and seemingly crumpled up in the zone, Elon scratched its way through for a chance to tie in the waning seconds. But senior guard Austin Hamilton’s 3-point attempt from the right wing missed everything, handing the Phoenix a 75-72 defeat to the Dukes on Saturday, Jan.

Column: Elon rides offensive freedom

Three times during Thursday night’s men’s basketball game, Elon University freshman guard Elijah Bryant took the ball up the floor, and without looking to pass, stepped up and took a 3-pointer. And all three times, he made the shot. Elon coach Matt Matheny gave his offense some more freedom as the Phoenix topped the College of William & Mary 85-79.

Elon beats William & Mary 85-79 in first CAA home victory

Freshman guard Elijah Bryant entered in to Thursday’s match up against the William and Mary University Tribe having been named Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Week for the fourth time. He played huge dividends for the Phoenix as it took home its first home CAA victory in a win over the Tribe by a final score of 85-79. The freshman led the team in scoring with 25 total points, 19 of which came in the second half alone.

Column: Elon passes toughness test

From the crossroads of Columbia, Mo., to the treacherous grounds of Cameron Indoor Stadium in Durham, I’d say the Elon University men’s basketball team passed its tests. While there aren’t any victories from it, there’s tangible evidence of growth as the end result. Elon trailed by 19 in the second half against the University of Missouri but put together a comeback that brought the Phoenix within one during the final minute before falling 78-73.

Okafor's post presence too much for Elon

DURHAM — The task of guarding Jahlil Okafor prompted a long, drawn-out series of thoughts for Elon University men’s basketball coach Matt Matheny. And the answer was still up in the air after the game ended. All 6 feet, 11 inches and 270 pounds of Okafor patrolled the post and had his way with the Phoenix on Monday, Dec.
