Women's lacrosse falls in 1st round of NCAA Tournament

CHAPEL HILL — The Elon University women’s lacrosse team dug a hole that proved too deep to climb out of Friday afternoon, falling to the University of Virginia 11-9 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in Chapel Hill. In the fourth-year program’s first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance, Elon saw the Cavaliers burst out of the gates in each half, scoring the first four goals of the match, including two on counterattacks.

Always in net: Elon goalie Rachel Ramirez

Armored in full protective gear—gloves, throat guard, throat piece, chest pad, shield, mouth guard—10-year-old Rachel Ramirez widened her stance. Feet spread a couple inches wider than the width of her slight shoulders, heels raised, crouched low.

Column: Experience should benefit women’s lacrosse team

The Elon University women’s lacrosse team isn’t young anymore. At least, not in terms of experience. The Phoenix enters its third year of competition (its second in the Colonial Athletic Association) after an encouraging 2015 campaign that included a CAA Rookie of the Year performance by now-sophomore midfielder Stephanie Asher. Elon also has a wealth of experience, something that wasn’t the case for the past two years as it built the program.
