Studs and duds of the gridiron

While there are players that go beyond what is expected of them, often known as “studs,” there are also those guys who are affectionately referred to as “duds.” These are the guys that fall short of all that is expected of them, enough to lose fans and even change teams. Two studs stood out in the college ranks of the gridiron in 2011.

2012 football slate promises tough matchups

Head coach Jason Swepson and the Elon football team will face an in-state opponent the first week of September, and will start the Southern Conference schedule facing the top three SoCon teams from 2011. “I’m very excited, obviously,” Swepson said.

Former quarterback Riddle arrested, according to reports

Former Elon University quarterback Scott Riddle was arrested Saturday, Nov. 19, for "assualt on a government official and resisting a public officer," according to The Courier-Tribune of Asheboro, N.C. According to the story on The Courier-Tribune's website and an Asheboro Police report, Riddle, 23, and Caitlyn Prestwood were found unresponsive in Riddle's truck at 3 a.m., which was parked in a random driveway in Asheboro. After being woken up by police and advised to call his mother to pick him up, Riddle became angry and charged officer G.

Football leads Appalachian State 24-14 at halftime

The Elon University football team leads No. 8 ranked Appalachian State University 24-14 at halftime in Rhodes Stadium. The Phoenix scored the game's first 21 points to take a commanding early lead and has not trailed since. After an Appalachian State fumble, Elon got on the board first with a five-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Thomas Wilson to sophomore wide receiver Rasaun Rorie, who caught the first touchdown pass of his career. The Elon defense then forced Appalachian State to punt, and an 11-yard punt set up Elon with starting field position at the Appalachian State 43 yard line.

Against ASU, football hopes to capitalize on Furman upset

After a loss at Wofford College put the Phoenix under .500 for the first time since its season-opening loss at Vanderbilt University, Elon University head coach Jason Swepson wanted to get back to that mark. "I told the team after the (Wofford) game, 'Let's get to 5-5, and put all our chips in against App,'" he said. The words proved to be prophetic, as the Phoenix defeated Furman University 41-34 Nov.

Back to basics, football faces Furman

Three straight losses have left the Elon University football team in a hole with two games left against plus-.500 teams. Head coach Jason Swepson took the bye week to work on the essentials. "We did a lot of individual work and going back to the basics," Swepson said. That included not turning the ball over, tackling and blocking, he said. The Phoenix, 4-5 overall and 2-4 in the Southern Conference face Furman University in Greenville, S.C.

Tweets say more about coaching

Another sign that the U.S.S. Swepson is sinking this season appeared on the Internet Saturday. Senior running back Jamal Shuman took to Twitter to colorfully criticize football coaches, led by head coach Jason Swepson, for a lack of playing time. One tweet read, "There goes another game of my f----- senior year nd I don't touch the f----- field lik I ain't one of the best athletes on dis d--- squad." Another tweet said, "our coaches to f----- dumb to realize wat dey had but now da season is ova #owell." Shuman (@JamalShuman) is not the first athlete to use the popular social media tool to express his frustrations.

Jamal Shuman suspended indefinitely

Elon senior running back Jamal Shuman has been suspended indefinitely, according to the Elon University athletic department. Shuman has 22 carries for 64 yards and no touchdowns this season in eight games. in 2009, Shuman was third in the Southern Conference in rushing yards per game with 67.7 yards per game and helped lead the Phoenix to the FCS playoffs that year. Phoenix done playing blame game

Heading into this weekend's showdown in Spartanburg, S.C. against Wofford College, Elon University football head coach Jason Swepson said his players have to "overcome the negative vibe" surrounding the team after it has dropped the last two games. The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga spoiled Elon's Homecoming game Saturday in Rhodes Stadium by defeating the Phoenix 42-18. Or maybe Elon spoiled its own Homecoming.
