Kevin Jermyn chasing down new goals as cross country coach

With the season-opening race on Saturday here in Elon, the new coach of the cross country team looks to elevate the program to places it hasn’t gone before. On July 13, Athletic Director Dave Blank announced that Kevin Jermyn would be taking the helm of the cross country program.

Her positive attitude and passion for running propelled her onward, but the more distance she covered, the more she felt an excruciating pain develop in her foot.

Cross country season ends at NCAA Southeast Regionals

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — A day that started with a record-breaking performance from senior Kimberly Johansen ended in frustration for sophomore Nick Ciolkowski and the Elon University cross country teams Friday at the NCAA Southeast Regional Championships. Johansen ended a sparkling cross country career with a school record time of 20:51.7 in the 6-kilometer race and her second-straight All-Region finish, taking 14th place.

Back-to-back: Ciolkowski repeats as CAA cross country champ

For the second time in as many tries, Elon University cross country sophomore Nick Ciolkowski went to the Colonial Athletic Association championships and emerged victorious, defending his CAA individual title in Newark, Delaware Saturday morning. But Ciolkowski said he preferred this year’s method — a comfortable pace for five kilometers, a burst with around three kilometers to go, and then cruise control to a 13-second victory — over last season’s seven-tenths-of-a-second sprint to the tape. “It felt great — it was a little less stressful than last year,” Ciolkowski said.

Cross country enters CAA with multiple title targets

The mindset entering the Colonial Athletic Association Championships is a little different in the second go-round for Elon University cross country sophomore Nick Ciolkowski. “Last year was more of a, ‘Put yourself there and what happens happens.’” Ciolkowski said.

Ciolkowski wins Elon Opener to start cross country season

The Elon University cross country teams officially kicked off their seasons Thursday night by hosting the Elon Opener. In the men’s 6-kilometer race, sophomore Nick Ciolkowski burst ahead of the pack around with 2,000 kilometers to take the lead for good, winning the race by 24 seconds with a time of 18 minutes and 32 seconds. “He’s on another level,” said head coach Nick Polk.

Title aspirations linger after Vargas departs

The 2014 cross country season was the longest in Elon University’s history. The impact of the success in 2014 can be felt as the 2015 season dawns for the Phoenix. In head coach Nick Polk’s office hang two plaques: one is for the 2014 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Cross Country Athlete of the Year and the other is a 2014 All-American plaque.

Column: Elon cross country holds some bragging rights

The running teams were the class of the Elon University athletic department in 2014-15. Sophomore distance runner Kimberly Johansen and the women’s track and field team captured the school’s first Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) title, winning the outdoor championships in May.
