Elon moves in right direction with win at Liberty

LYNCHBURG, Va. — With losses and missed opportunities hanging over its heads, a thrown bat signified a possible jump back to normalcy for the Elon University baseball team. Junior first baseman Casey Jones, the Southern Conference’s best hitter, threw his bat during an eighth-inning at-bat, sparking memories of him doing it countless times early in the season. Early in the season when Elon was doing well, that is. Senior Ryan Pennell worked out of two jams and the Phoenix snapped a six-game losing streak and a nine-game road losing streak with a 7-6 win at No.

Tension in ninth inning scars Elon loss to UNC

Jawing between the two dugouts in the ninth inning and following the game marred what was a 12-6 victory by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill over host Elon University. With two outs in the top of the ninth, UNC sophomore Landon Lassiter stole second for his third steal of the year.

Losses put Elon in tough spot for SoCon seeding

A skid that has now become seven losses in nine games has driven the term “crunch time” to a whole new level for the Elon University baseball team. The ladder of those losses, a 7-5 shortcoming to Davidson College May 4, illustrated how tough the stretch has been for Elon. “It’s frustrating,” junior left fielder Casey Jones said.

Elon baseball splits first two games against Davidson

After getting swept by the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and having its midweek game against Coastal Carolina University canceled because of weather, the Elon University baseball team took a step forward Friday night before regressing once again Saturday. Going up against the Southern Conference’s best in Davidson College, the Phoenix won the series opener 8-5 before falling 9-2 on Saturday. “You are what you repeatedly do,” Elon head coach Mike Kennedy said.

Elon swept in SoCon for first time since 2010

A rough-going on offense Friday, a struggle all-around on Saturday and another dismal day Sunday provided enough for the Elon University baseball team to be swept in Southern Conference play for the first time since March 2010. The Phoenix lost 5-1 Friday and 12-3 Saturday to the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and took a 13-4 defeat on Sunday to end the series. Elon swept UNCG a year ago on the road as well.

Elon set for three games with UNCG

Pitching will once again be the key to success for the Elon University baseball team. The Phoenix looks to be shuffling its weekend rotation for the third time in as many weeks as it travels down Interstate-40 to take on the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in a three-game Southern Conference series. Two weeks ago at Wofford College, Elon coach Mike Kennedy gave junior Jake Stalzer, who normally throws on Sundays, the weekend off to regroup.

Elon takes two of three from Appalachian State

The Elon University baseball team saw some mixed results both on the mound and at the plate in a three-game series with Appalachian State University that saw the Phoenix win two games out of three. Elon rode an eighth inning home run by senior second baseman Sebastian Gomez to a 6-2 win in the first game, before a rough day on the mound for the Phoenix allowed Appalachian State to take the second 10-4, but Elon won the final game 4-2 behind a stellar outing by junior pitcher Jake Stalzer. Elon 6, Appalachian State 2 Gomez stepped to the plate with no outs in the eighth inning and runners at second and third.

Another milestone: Kennedy humble in earning 600th win

SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Six hundred wins is a big deal, right? “It’s really not,” said Elon University baseball coach Mike Kennedy. Kennedy won his 600th game April 12 when the Phoenix routed Wofford College 12-2. Currently in his 18th year at the helm, he’s had 16 winning seasons and advanced to the NCAA Tournament six times. “I’m pretty happy I was able to be a part of it tonight,” junior pitcher John Antonelli said.
