When Elon University head baseball coach Mike Kennedy was asked about the 17 new players on his 2014 team, he refused to say that they were part of a rebuilding year. Instead, Kennedy said that his team went out to “reload” for a run at a fifth Southern Conference regular season or third Southern Conference tournament championship.
Elon University junior Wil Leathers had a feeling he would be pinch-hitting in the eighth inning for the Phoenix baseball team. Elon coach Mike Kennedy knew a fastball would be thrown to him at some point. That prior knowledge led to a bloop single into left field from Leathers, scoring senior second baseman Sebastian Gomez and giving the Phoenix a 3-2 win over the University of North Carolina at Wilmington Feb.

RALEIGH — Amid a bizarre week filled with snow and postponements, the sense of unpredictability hung around the Elon University baseball team during its season opener against the University of Cincinnati. After the grueling marathon that is the Major League Baseball regular season, the playoffs are finally upon us.
Nobody does it bigger than the New York Yankees. They have the biggest payroll in Major League Baseball, which stood at $228,995,945 entering the 2013 season, the most World Series championships in the history of the game with 27 and the highest luxury tax year-in and year-out. They also send players out with dazzling celebrations and honors, just like what happened with Mariano Rivera this year. Known as one of the "Core Four" players for years with the Yankees, paired with shortstop Derek Jeter, pitcher Andy Pettitte and retired catcher Jorge Posada, Rivera and Pettitte decided 2013 would be their last hurrah in the league and would retire at the end of the year. Rivera leaves the game as the all-time saves leader, notching 652 saves through 19 seasons with the Yankees.
There comes a difficult point in time when every baseball player must hang up his cleats and retire from the game.
